Challenge: write an alternate history of LSU football over the last three decades.

Would be a great paper and as I believe Baloo put it in another thread, I believe Bo Rein would have been very successful at LSU and certainly would have prevented the erratic play under Stovall and obviously not gotten to the likes of Archer his last 2 years and Hallman's debacle. I believe I could write a pretty good paper on that scenario.

Bobby Bowden takes the LSU offer that he turned down.

Nuff said.

What's really interesting is how much Louisiana talent went out of state in the 80s and early 90s, a trend not really reversing until Dinardo nabbed Kevin Faulk and also was able to go into New Orleans for the first time in near two decades.

Would a powerful LSU prevent the rise of Florida St? If LSU is a major program, do guys like Marshall Faulk and Warrick Dunn, for example, stay in Louisiana? Does Peyton Manning come to LSU? (No. Archie hates us - don't ever forget that).

The Dolphins override the team doctors' opinions and sign Drew Brees

The Bo Rein story is like JFK's presidency, he's more famous for dying a spectacular death, than for his coaching accomplishments. It was a positive thing that we went out of our nepotistic practices and hired Rein, everyone was excited, including me, and was optimistic for our football future, but he was stll somewhat of an unproven entity as far as the college "big leagues" go, and what he may or may not have accomplished here will never be known. Maybe Dunn stays in-state but I don't think many people were able to see the talent that Marshall had. A lot of big name programs didn't think Marshall could be a RB at the college level. It wasn't just LSU. SDSU gave him his shot because they were desperate. And he used what he perceived as disrespect to fuel him and turn him into the great player he became.

And neither of the Mannings were ever a possibility to come to LSU. Archie wouldn't let that happen.

and runs it in the ground like he did FSU's. no thanks. bowden's damage to FSU is still ongoing. he is the person responsible for FSU turning the SEC down a coupla decades ago; he demanded a disproportionate share of revenues. the ACC jumped on it. you can't honestly think the SEC would be a stronger conference if they allowed uneven revenue splitting. it would tear the SEC house down. bowden, who admitedly built the program, then systematically began to tear it down but he had the political power to keep his job for about 10 more yrs. FSU alumni donations and ticket sales took a dive but bowden didn't give a shite. even tho LSU suffered thru a series of bad or mediocre coaches, i'm glad we didnt get bowden.

Saban would be coaching Texas and Dallas Cowboys simultaneously.

Seeing as performance isn't a criterion for keeping the job at either place, Saban shouldn't have much of a problem doing that.

That's not as much Bowden's fault as the management at FSU. He built that program from nothing but he was allowed to hang on for too long after the game had passed him by. I agree about the uneven revenue split though. Bowden thought he had more stroke than he did and tried to dictate terms to the SEC who rightfully told him to pound sand.

it wasn't a question of the SEC, it's about LSU.

He built FSU into a powerhouse regardless of whether or not he stayed too long. He would have made LSU incredibly strong from the onset and we wouldn't have had nearly 15 yrs worth of crap.

don't think he could get away with a lot of the shite they pulled during that stretch these days, they weren't called the criminoles for nothing, honest to allah truth, their AD had a misdemeanor and a felony division to take care of their players, and put on spin for the media

yup. both fsu and a&m were buying players like crazy duing that time. my bro-in-law played for fsu and his stories of the money, cars and other stuff are incredible. bowden was "above it all" with his preaching but he made damn sure the money was there to pay his guys. i have no respect for him.

my bro-in-law didn't and I have a great amount of respect for what he accomplished. Nobody has a clue if he paid for players or not just like no one has a clue what goes on now.

Bowden was a sleazy snake oil salesman. It would be some sort of poetic justice if his legacy was exposed a la Paterno.
