Why is every pitch that breaks called a slider by the ESPN analyst? Sliders DO NOT break across two planes or more than one foot.

Why?

They do research and talk to each pitcher. If they say someone is throwing a slider, it's because the research tells them they're throwing a slider.

Do you realize how hard it is to legitimately tell the difference in a sharp slider and sweeping curveball from the press box?

They know what pitches are the favorites of the guys throwing that night and they build educated guesses off of the research. I would also pretty much guarantee they are right more often than you are......

Yeah right. I did not hear one curve ball called tonight. Sliders do not fall off the table at the batters waist to be dug out of the dirt by the catcher.

My definition of a slider for a righty is a pitch that cuts away from a right-handed batter, while a running fastball cuts into the batter. My boy's curve ball drops off the earth from 12 to 6 just at the plate.

I remember at one point during the game they showed a graphic. It said 24 fastballs had been thrown by Gray, 13 sliders, and I believe 10 curveballs was the other one. I know for sure of the numbers and the three categories, and I'm almost positive it said curveballs, sliders, and fastballs.

I heard a few, but, as previously mentioned, they weren't going to focus on the curve when his best/favorite pitch is his slider.

Doesn't a curve ball break?

I think fly by night travelling announcers call anything that is not a 12 to 6 curve a slider. I've heard them say changeup on curve balls.....they don't know what they are seeing most of the time.

Feel lucky its even on TV.

That curve ball to the man who hasn't researched could also be called a splitter or even one hellacious circle change. The point I'm trying to make is that the announcers are doing their best off of the information given and the OP is bitching about some truly trivial shite considering we just beat the number 3 overall draft pick to go up 1-0 in the super regionals.

I thought the third pitch category was change up, not curveball.

Sure they do. Most pitchers that use their slider as their out pitch start it thigh high and have it dive in the dirt. Randy Johnson comes to mind.

You know what you call a slider thrown for a strike? A home run......

Yea, and curve balls also arent thrown at 87 mph either. If a pitcher sits in the mid 90's and throws a breaking pitch less than 10 mph off of that, then it's pretty safe to say it's a slider. And yes, to whoever in the hell said that sliders only break in one plane, slider can def break down into the dirt. Have you ever seen Brad Lidge or Frankie Rodriguez pitch. They have almost 12 to 6 break on their sliders that sit at 90 mph.

Kyle Pederson is the most knowledgeable college baseball announcer in the business. Sliders can most certainly have downward break on them. Sliders can even break straight down. I'm going to put my money on Kyle Pederson and not the tards in here that think sliders can't break downward.
