did the board meltdown for the Bluegrass Miracle?

That would've been the closest thing, I think.

Also, expectations are lower for BB with a new coach and a team that hasn't been great the past few years.

I recall the Rant melting down though...even though we won.

Well, I really only go on TD for LSU basketball, SEC rant, MSB, and the gaming board.

Johnny Jones is in year one of a rebuilding project. In Saban's fist year at LSU, we were thrilled to win any SEC game. Hell, we rushed the field for an overtime win over 11th ranked Tennessee.

Things are different when you're an established program. And then add to it, in football a single regular season game can determine your postseason fate. In the other sports, the stakes of losing are not as high.

Is this shite real life? LSU football has the most talent in the country. They should be cruising through teams way more often than they do.

LSU basketball has sucked for three seasons. Every win is huge.

Plus winning on the road in SEC basketball is so difficult. Everything about playing on the road in this conference is a joke.

Actually, I think you can prove the EXACT opposite point. This goes to show you that LSU fans are smart and know where their teams stand and what they should produce. Thus, they have been right to be upset with the production of the football team which has consistently been ranked high since 2002 and underproduced in the past few years and be happy for a basketball team that has exceeded expectations based on the recent past. It makes complete sense.

I lived through our football team going through the same exact situation and was just as excited then. Your argument is off base.

The expectations are quite obviously different.

Success breeds different expectations. That's part of the process.
That does not need to be the case, however. The point the OP makes is that high expectations can take the fun out of games we win, or even entire seasons that are objectively successful. And this has zero to do with "accepting mediocrity" or hurting the team, because no one in their right mind would seriously believe that how happy they are or are not in the stands (much less on the internet) after a game has anything to do with whether or not the team is/will be successful.

Kentucky doesn't suck because a lot of its fans are excited about beating Kent State. A lot of its fans are excited about beating Kent State because they love Kentucky football and have not been browbeaten by douchebags into not enjoying wins over Kent State. They don't have as many of those douchebags because their team sucks and douchebags like that ignore teams that suck and gravitate towards teams that are great (which means most of the Kentucky douchebags are at the Basketball games, making sure no one enjoys their wins over LSU and Texas A&M). More Kentucky football fans still remember that the point of being a fan is to have fun, and that enjoying a win is more fun than being pissed off about a win. And the fact that they cheered and clapped and had a great time at those wins did not change the fact that Joker Phillips, Rich Brooks and Guy Morris were all fired.

quote:

I'm looking forward to the day that we are disappointed that this game had to come down to this.
I cannot fathom someone looking forward to feeling bad. It just makes no sense to me.
quote:

That's the day the Tigers will be consistent NCAA tournament contenders and I prefer that to the fleeting thrill and jubilation of having a comeback win against a sub-par team.
You say that as if it's impossible to be happy when your team wins a game like this if your team is a consistent tournament contender? Why would you want to intentionally, deliberately choose to feel bad instead of good because of something that is likely to happen two months later? Why not simply enjoy the exciting win, AND enjoy going to the tournament every year?

There's the reality of it. 2002 NR, 2004 #16, 2008 NR, 2009 #17.
The term past few years leaves some room for revisionist historians, but I don't see consistently high rankings that suddenly disappeared.
I guess what you see just depends on how badly you need to feel about the program.

Most of us who have actually lived through that situation are appreciative of 21st century LSU football.

dude you know why this is the case

football should be in contention for the title yearly and when we aren't people don't like it

basketball is rebuilding we broke a couple year tournament less streak by goign one and done in the NIT, noone was expecting us to really do anything this year.

in basketball when we win a close one against anyone its huge.

in football when we win a close game against most teams (excluding Bama Florida, USCe and Georgia) the board melts down.

Solid post.

Stupid post. There's no comparison between LSU's football and basketball teams. If LSU's BB team was a top-tier program and a NC contender the OP may have a point. However, LSU has only three conference wins against five losses and will struggle to make the post season. A win, in this situation, against an SEC opponent, on the road, is a quality win.

ETA: a last second FG against KY, in my book, would be a decent win. It's still an SEC win. A last second FG against Northwestern State would be cause for complaint.

That's a very uninformed spin.

Avg final USA rank 9.25*, Rivals 9.5, LSU Tigers '05-'12
Avg final USA rank 11.25*, Rivals 9.6, LSU Tigers '00-'12
*assigning #26 to NR seasons.

This indicates the current staff has actually outperformed it's Rivals avg recruiting rank, and outperformed the avg final USA vs Rivals rank for all 21st century.

Do you really not understand expectations?

LSU football is a top 5 program in the country and has won 2 national championships and been to a third in the last 10 years.

Football is the money maker and the athletic budget sustainer.

This thread is retarded.

So if you root for basketball you must be a sunshine pumper. I love LSU, but this team isnt very good and its pretty damn obvious.

If you don't know that the expectations of the football team are different than the basketball team this year you have probably been under a rock since 1999.
