I can definitely see Aranda running a 3-4 base defense.

If Beckwith stays we will only need to fill 1 linebacker spot because Key/Bower/Neal are great fits for a typical 3-4 OLB.

I can see it now:

LOLB: Key
ILB 1: Beckwith
ILB 2: ??
ROLB: Bower/Neal

LE: Godchaux
NT: LaCouture
RE: Herron/Neal

I could also see a 3-3-5 with key on the line in a two point being pretty detrimental to offenses on passing downs.

Did you miss the part where Aranda says he "doesnt run a base defense"? And he fits the scheme around the players he has?

Did you forget the part of his interview when he said he ran a base 4-3 his first year at Wisconsin and switched to a base 3-4 his second year based on more linebacker talent?

Every defense has a base its a fact and you can't get around it. He may switch it up and run a few plays with 2 down lineman, 4 down lineman or even 1 down lineman but that doesn't change the fact that he will have a base.

1st and 10 you will almost always see a team come out in their base defense unless the team their playing has an unbalanced offense that needs more or less DB's on the field (ex: A&M, Texas Tech)

Bama and Arky would destroy this...are you kidding me?

Not as a base. "passing downs"

Y'all are so fast to bash a post that you don't even comprehend the post before bashing.

A 3-3-5 can adjust to a 3-4 pretty easy. We are loaded at DB and our safeties are good in the run game. Why not use that strength?

NT: LaCouture
LSU doesn't have ANYONE that can play block eater.

That is the key obstacle with us playing 3-4

Christian is a 4-3 DT or a 3-4 DE

The word you are looking for is obtuse. For some reason these will be the standard replies on Page 1 of every thread on the Rant.

I believe this is what we will see in Year 1 at LSU. We just don't have the LB depth; even your depth chart above shows ???? for one of the LB positions.

LSU's base defensive alignment will be the 4-3 because our strength is in the DL talent.

Key? 100%, will be incredible
Bower? definitely has the mold
Neal? No. He will probably be a weakside 3-4 DE with Godchaux on the strong side.

I think we'll deffinitly be a 4-3 next year given what kind of players we have. Aranda isn't one to stand on pride when it comes to that

I could also see Duke Reilly having a debo level break out season next season as well

Multiple is multiple. Our base will be whatever it needs to be against each opponent

I just don't see Neal at ROLB even in a 3-4

I can agree to this but at Wisconsin Aranda didn't run a traditional 3-4 where a monster 340lb NT can make or break a defense.

I don't know a whole lot about the 1 gap 3-4 but it looks like the NT is responsible for aggressively attacking the A gap to either side of the center (slanting) instead of trying to hold position and clog both the A gaps like Bama does.

But I do agree that he is not the typical 3-4 NT you would want but maybe Aranda can make it work

Well, I think the debate is would you rather fill in 2 LB spots where we're very thin or move some guys around and only have to fill in 1

No final decision yet but I'm told Kendell Beckwith/LB/LSU is giving indications he will return for his senior season.
