I guess he had the "chest" to play for UM. Now I understand where he gets that from.

This. Much, much bigger. Partly due to S&C, partly due to rules changes. Allowing use of the hands makes leverage and strength a premium for linemen over agility.

Different times bro. Same reason why the 1962 Green Bay Packers would lose 62-0 to the 2016 Tennessee Titans and wouldn't gain 50 yards of offense.

It wasn't uncommon for offensive linemen to be 220-250 pounds back when he played.

Here's the 1974 Michigan roster:

Kevin Mawae was talking about it the other day. He said he was about Kendall Beckwith's size when he played o-line at LSU. Crazy thing is that Miles isn't a small man. It's all the steroids in the foods these days

People are getting bigger. I'm sure mostly from steroids they put food but whatever it is. The average size of humans is increasing. So you can imagine what it's doing in the elite built like athletes.

I was watching pre game for the NC, Booger and DJ Fluker stood next to each other. He made Booger look tiny. Although Dj is in playing shape you could tell the body size difference was substantial. Booger said he wore a size 13, Dj said 20! Now can you imagine Booger trying to get by the big SOB?

My Dad received a full scholarship to play at Northwestern State. He always talks about how the coach told him he was too big at 6-3 260 and if he showed up at school over 240 lbs he would pull his scholarship. 265 was too fat to play OL in the 70's

6'4" 248 his Soph year and made 1st team All-SEC at tackle.

6'4" 278 for the draft and picked up in 2nd round.

Guy would eat like a damn fiend just to keep that weight. All the weight gain shakes were crazy.

Different era.

That's why players like Billy Cannon and Gayle Sayers were considered freaks of nature back in the 50s/60s in college.

Both would be really good, but not dominate in today's game

Proper nutrition is more the reason. I know not everyone eats well, but the number of people going without food of any kind has decreased substantially. It's been shown that in times of hardship average height will decrease in a population. German children during WWI and WWII had lower average heights than before or after (well the after took a while to recover).

scientists dispute this. I can't remember the article I read this from but it was from respected researchers and they said that nutrition based growth is about maxed out in developed countries and that "fat" is skewing the stats of non athletes. they ran a bunch of studies and conclude that, in the long run, the human body is getting smaller and will continue to do so. their reasoning is evolution based and the premise that humans don't use their bodies as much as their brains anymore.

that being said, in my day OL were in the 250 pound range but were very quick.
