I'm certainly no Alleva supporter, but wasn't it the university president that torpedoed the whole thing? I'd say booster anger is misdirected if any of that is true.

Alleva took his shot and missed. Now the other side is going to take their shots. That's how Battleship works.

Alleva could have and should have put an end to the speculation the moment it started. He didn't and let the program take a huge hit. Bad move on his part and some may (likely will) want to hold him responsible for the damage to the program, including the adverse affect this all has had on recruiting. [Even more likely if it's true Alleva was the source of the initial "leaks"]
