In 1982, he moved to LSU as the Quarterbacks Coach. The LSU Tigers improved their record to 8–3–1 from 3–7–1 the year prior in large part due to the Mack Brown's coaching of QB Alan Risher who threw for 1,834 yards with 17 TD vs 8 INT. He also completed 63.7% of his pass attempts. Risher had thrown 14 TD in the previous 2 seasons combined before Brown's arrival.

yep went to appy state right after that in '83.

Didn't Mack Brown want to return to LSU as head coach at one point?

I may not have this exactly right but I think Bill Arnsparger wanted Mack Brown to stay on as assistant head coach. Basically he would have been like a "head coach in waiting". Mack Brown would have none of it and moved on.

Offensive Coordinator and like Assistant Head Coach. I guess if Mack had a Crystal Ball and knew that Bill would be leaving he could have stayed and been Head Coach! Mack was responsible for going into Florida and Signing Jeff Wickersham. At the time that was unheard of for LSU to go into Florida and sign someone like Wickersham!!

I don't remember, I do remember that 82 team though. One of the best defensive units I have ever seen. Whipped the Bear in Tuscalousa it was a beautiful thing.

I was at that game in Legion Field. Bama had no first downs at the half. Lsu ran a 3-4 defense against the wishbone and shut it down. It was so nice to hear the stunned silence from the Bama crowd.

Mack Brown may hate LSU but Les Miles's daughter enrolled at the University of Texas last month.

This would be news to me. I think Mack only coached 1 season ('82). Stovall was fired after '83 and Arnsparger's first year was '84. IOW, Mack was already gone before Bill arrived.

From what I understand, his daughter wanted to go their for their swim team. I am sure Les was disappointed but face it man, he is going to love his daughter and family before anything. I know I would.

Mack Brown turned down the HC job at LSU. LSU then moved to Dinardo.

I know this for a fact since I made the call at the behest of Joe Dean. Mack's wife, while at LSU, worked for me. LSU wanted an informal contact without going through the channels.

Mack said NC was a better job than LSU. He passed and a few years later went to TX. I always thought he did not want to compete in the SEC.

The coaches on Stovall's staff loathed Mack because he took credit for the offensive surge that year when George Belu was the OC. Mack would be introduced in interviews as OC and would not correct the announcer or sportswriter.

Mack was not a team player and constantly promoting himself. He is more of a rah rah guy and fundraiser. Mack possesses a photographic memory and will never forget anyone he has met.

He is gone Pecans at Texas....

After leaving LSU, he went to App State for a year, was OC at Oklahoma one year, and Head coach Tulane for 3 years. The NC job didnt come until 5 years down the line.
