LINK

Check out the beginning - The video clearly shows the receiver looking to the sideline to get the OK from the line judge. What am I missing here? Total BS call!!!

Looks like the inside receiver took a step back.

Which was irrelevant because neither was on the line to begin with. Yeah, it doesn't make sense how you check with the line judge and are not on the line.

The slot receiver looked over. The wide receiver did not (in the video linked.

You could tell Dupre knew Dural wasn't on the line.

That was the issue. ONE needed to be on the line

Was the penalty because Dupre backs up a step off the line?

Dural hadn't been on the line of scrimmage all night, just crappy how they decided to call it on THAT play.

Dural was supposed to be on the line, Dupre off. That's why Dupre moved back a step, he was already in the right spot but Dural was about a yard off the line.

Usually the slot receiver uses the X receiver to line up. Dural needs to be the one to get lined up right.

Les expressed a particular interest in reviewing this play/penalty on tape. If it was indeed a matter of the receivers not lining up properly then they need to be coached up to understand what they're doing wrong.

It's a shame a matter of irrelevant inches could cost a team a score. I suspect Les and the coaches will be all over this in the filmroom and on the field.

Inches are not irrelevant when they create penalties, whether offsides, illegal formation or hits OOB.
It's a game of inches.

No. Look at the beginning of the linked video. The blue line is the line of scrimmage. Both of the wide outs are 1-2 yard behind that blue line. Fournette would have scored regardless, but the formation was definitely illegal.

what I dont get is he checked, then jumped back a half step and looked over again, as if to re check. Did they move him off? wtf?

then they throw the flag on 83.

The ref on the far side of the field had his hand in his pocket about 3-4 seconds before the play was snapped. He was going to throw that flag as soon as we snapped it.

Steps: WR and slot break huddle and come to line. WR checks with line judge and lines up on line. Slot then notes position of WR and steps back appropriate distance to be in backfield.

So, the slot adjusted to the WR as he's supposed too. WR didn't check off so never was in the right spot.

It's usually a warning from the ref when it happens that if he forgets again he'll get a flag, at least on HS and small college level. Not sure if that warning took place earlier in the game.

but he didnt look at Dural. He looks at the ref, gestures, THEN takes a half step back, looks over again, then sets.

Maybe Dural was in the wrong spot for the play call, but if the slot stays on the line, there is no flag, right?

Who moves Dupre off the line?

You could call illegal formation all day long. O-Lines line up in a V formation these days with the ends tackles way off the line. It is BS to just randomly call it.

Yeah, you can see the line judge (far side of field) lean to his left just before the snap to evaluate the way we are lined up then he puts his hand in his pocket.
