How do you feel about our Special Teams unit this season?
Posted by Modest on 8/4/17 at 11:27 am61
Haven't heard much about this unit lately, and since it's been a sore subject in recent history, I'm curious to see what the rant expects.
Will Gamble put it in the end zone consistently this season?
I heard good things about Culp when he came on last year. I hope we have a consistent leg this season. I don't need any more "If we didn't miss an easy chip shot" excuses this season. Colby was great, but he had his fair share of blown opportunities.
Is Growden ready to be the Aussie kicker we'd hoped he'd be? Consistency here will go a long way for our defense.
Which young guns do you think we'll see cutting their teeth on kick-off coverage? I remember getting our first glimpses of Guice's speed and power when he was chasing down KO Returners his Freshman year. I hope we can expect more of our highly touted freshmen to prove themselves here.
Will Donte PLEASE run a kick off back to the house for me? It's been so long!
Finally, my understanding is we hired a specialist for the off season, but are we ever going to fill that vacancy with a full time S/T Coach?

I feel good. It's been getting better by the year the last few years. I'm still dying a little when I think about the kick out of bounds against Bama in 2014 with a lead under a minute. BS

Awesome thread topic, thanks for starting. I'm curious to see what others are expecting as well. Special teams play could be the difference in a few W's over the course of a season.

Will not be hard to improve on the past. Miles was almost as stubborn/idiotic with his special teams as he was with his offense.

He seemed like an awesome dude, but he was a very average kicker the last two years.
ETA: It was really frustrating as a fan to watch LSU go from one of the best units in the country year in and year out to one of the worst under Les in his final two years. Peveto was an awful coach.

I wonder too how this is going to work without a coach on the field during the game.
Time will tell. How much emphasis does Coach O put on it?
Peveto gone is a good thing. But Coach O not hiring another sp coach could signal he isnt a detail oriented coach.
If coach O isnt a detail guy our sp could be trouble.

Will feel better when the special teams coach is no longer an analyst and can get on the sideline.

I feel like I have a better chance at keeping my posting privileges for an entire season with Bradley Dale gone. I'm ready for Gamble to use up what seems like the 6th year of his scholarship and see if the kids coming up can keep kickoffs in bounds. And are we over our requirement that all punters must be Australians?

I understand the special teams being frustrating but it was a coaching decision by Miles to use the corner kick increasing the number of kickoffs going out of bounds.
Change the "strategy" and you will change the outcome.
Who cares where the punters come from as long as they are good at their job.
By the way Brad Wing was very good.
Go Tiger's
Definitely need to improve and stop the out of bounds crap.

Culp seems to be ahead of Gonsoluin.
Gamble will probably hang on to the KO duties, he still has a damn strong leg when he's allowed to kick it.
Drake Davis and Donte Jackson will most likely be the KO and punt returners. Doubt Guice gets anymore back there.

Nobody has mentioned that 4 (Count Em) position coaches will be handling each separate area of ST's during practice and games. (With McMahon supervising from some secret location) Never heard of this. May work and may not..........
I really hope we block a few punts or a field goals this year. I don't remember us blocking a fg since ole Miss in '13 and I can't even tell you the last time we blocked a punt. Also, for everyone who says Gamble has a strong leg, where are you getting that idea from? He has yet to demonstrate that, even when he was supposed to put the ball in the end zone.

I know it's pussyish to say this, but they didn't beat us, we just flat out lost that game.
Is that a distinction with any merit? Probably not, but it's still the damned truth.

Average? Statistically, he ended his LSU career as one of the top 3 kickers we've ever had.

I dont get why people are freaking out about a ST coach not being on the sidelines. How much would he do during the game anyway? O will make the decisions on what happens, when it happens and how he wants it to happen. A ST coordinator isn't going to change the way a kicker kicks during the game. If they have a solid coach helping prepare our ST guys in practice, then all should be well right?
If other coaches, who are on the sidelines, can help in the areas a ST coordinater would then it should work out fine.

Glad I never have to see retardo peveto on our sidelines ever again. It's kind of like having to see on my tv the first base softball coach. ruins my stomach so I turn off my tv.

I don't trust Donte with kickoff returns. He's too light in the arse to be running that damn fast right into the helmet of opponents. That fumble against Florida enraged me.
