In 2000-2001, we had seven scholly players on the team, and two starters out for the season, and we were still competitive in every game save the Kentucky game.

This year, just like in 2001, we have a depleted roster from a defending SEC champion, but anytime we're playing a good team, they're beating the living hell out of us.

We all love Johnson, especially me...how sure are we that this will work long time?

Not very concerned. We have a great recruiting class coming in next year

dude. some of these guys aren't very good. we have a few who shouldn't be playing major conference basketball at all. it is what it is. give Trent 4 years is what we said when we hired him. Well he won the SEC in 1 year. I don't think there is anything to be concerned about. He didn't forget how to coach but he has absolutely no guards.

That's my first thought...I'm only less eager to put money on it right now.

The season is unfolding right about how many predicted it would so why be that concerned.
As for the Competition the Tigers did compete well in the WSU OT loss and that's a team that will compete well in the Pac10 and probably make a post-season tourney. Same for WKU. Nice win there for the Tigers against a team that will probably win teh SunBelt and will definitely be in line for the big dance come March. Just like Jay Williams said last night, against good teams, the Tigers have to have decent nights from their three best players to have a chance. Last night Spencer and Mitchell missed a dozen wide open looks between them and Storm looked lost most of the night. That same effort last night would have cost them 2 or 3 more losses than they have now IMO. WKU, ISU and NSU all would have beaten the Tigers with that type of effort. Hell, McNeese will beat them if they play that way next week. I still think they will be consistent enough to finish just above .500 for the season when all is said and done. And how could you be concerned about the future with a top ten recruiting class on the way? The Tigers will contend for the West again as early as next season IMO.

I am not terribly worried. Basketball is very different than football and you can go from bad to very good in little time.

The trouble with this very thin team is that we have to rely on Spencer a lot to score and handle the ball, but Spencer is not a terribly, uh, reliable player (I guess that is a nice way to put it). So, TJ has to put up with a lot of bad shots, poor decisions and turnovers.

As bad as last night was, this team can play decent ball if things are going well for Warren, Spencer and Mitchell. I have not given up hope for an NIT bid this year.

That's what I was thinking. It's not just the depth, but the overall lack of talent. Even of the top guys. Taz and Storm are the only 2 that would start on any other good SEC team, and there are teams that even they wouldn't start on. I'm surprised everybody didn't expect this kind of year with the overwhelming lack of talent on this squad. Trent's coaching is not an issue at all, but his inability to sign someone the last 2 years who could come in make an immediate impact on the offensive end might be. I don't follow baskeball recruing, though.

It would be no different if Brady was here this year, plus Brady would have already run off two or three guys!

This is why Trent was brought in, to build a program he had to sacrifice this year to be able to get some kids into the program that will stay awhile and help the APR.

It will be a long year this year.

well getting White was big and his class is pretty damn good, but basketball recruiting is so tough when some of these guys have been commits or atleast interested in other schools/coaches when they are sophomores in HS. Its really a much different animal than football (especially at LSU). The class that just signed has some good players in it though.

Our best player is Taz. IMO, he'd have trouble starting at other SEC schools.

Oh, I agree, it seems to be a much longer process. That's why I'm not too worried about. Calipari was able to come in and made quick impact. Though I realize that Trent is no Calipari, and LSU is no Kentucky.

Just for comparisons' sake, in 00-01 to this date we had played 7 games (2 road, 5 home)....

11/28/00 at Houston - W (61-59)
12/9/00 Texas Southern - W (89-59)
12/13/00 McNeese State - W (87-68)
12/16/00 New Orleans - W (84-57)
12/20/00 at Arizona - L (88-75)
12/22/00 Nicholls State - W (92-49)

You also have to figure in the difference the APR makes in todays game, the level of in-state recruiting talent leading up to these years, as well as the fact that 00-01 was Brady's 4th season in comparison to this being Johnson's 2nd year.

Anyone who expected anything from this years basketball team is a rantard, pure and simple.

TJ got every ounce of talent out of last year's team, I hope people see and understand that.

This year was going to be a struggle, .500 in SEC play would be a major accomplishment. Has nothing to do with TJ not being a good coach or ability to recruit. The program was in pretty piss poor shape as far as future MINUS last years 4 seniors, and he got far more out of those guys than anyone could have really expected

Other than Taz and Spencer you had nothing returning of substance. The signing class was very weak and a down year was and is expected this year. Johnson is building a long term type of program and not an overnight deal. You may want to wait and ask this question next year after he has a decent class and maybe some decent depth.
