Hoops Strategy - Defense

Much to the chagrin of Tigers basketball fans, we have a team that is almost unbelievably poor at rebounding and interior defense (see numerous other posts on the Rant decrying the sad state of affairs). In addition to Victor becoming eligible - and hoping he makes a HUGE difference - here is what I would like to see JJ try:
1. A zone-trap press. Nothing fancy, just a trap off made buckets. Force the man receiving inbounds to one side, trap, with an athletic "center-fielder" to pick off errant passes out of the trap.
2. Once the trap is beaten, fall back into a 2-3 zone.
3. Even when not pressing, play more 2-3 zone.
Cons are that zones make it harder to ID block out assignments and can also give up better looks at 3's. However, we already can't rebound worth a lick and we give up open 3's all the time. Hard to imagine we would do worse.
Pros could be substantial. You could protect Simmons from foul trouble to some degree in a zone, and at least one rebounder and defender would always be in the middle as that would be his zone responsibility. No more endless free drives and floaters in the key.
What sayeth the Rant?

To me that's another failure of the staff to not be so detail oriented that you know ahead of time which game he's coming back for. Or for not exploring all opportunities to adjust his finals schedule (within the rules) to get him on the court sooner.
They handled his eligibility like they coach defense basically.

On paper, we should be an excellent man to man team or defense in general because of length. I've written about this in other posts and I'll say it again here...our ONLY problem, is we guard too far out.
For some reason, CJJ wants our guards to pressure 35 feet away from the basket. In college now, you cannot handcheck otherwise it is a foul. Because of this, we have to sag off some. So right off the bat, we are giving guards lanes to penetrate, and then can ball screen high so our big men are 30 feet away from the goal and completely out of position for rebounds. We cut passing lanes and play tight on the perimeter. So what happens is the PG attacks, gets into the lane, and now our big men have to step up and contest floaters...which leads to offensive rebounds. Sometimes, our off ball guards come to help and leaves WIDE open 3's. It's maddening because ALL of this is due to us guarding the perimeter so deep. If we simply sank back and forced them to shoot contested jump shots, we would almost certainly be undefeated.
Look at how teams defend us. They sink off, then make us shoot a 3 that is lightly pressured and contested. These are college kids, they can make WIDE open 3's, but even a little pressure would cut down their percentage drastically.

at this point after giving up 100 pts twice it cant get much worse. play a matchup zone, coomitmto it and just go from there

JJ says what, standing around, not rotating, and giving guards open lanes from 25 feet out for layups is my defense.

It's sad because I love CJJ and he loves LSU. He has way more passion than people give him credit for, but I'm blown away by our defense. There's bad defense, then there is LSU defense

We do play too far out, but that's not the only problem. Our rotations are terrible and we rebound poorly even when people are there. Does anyone on this team besides Simmons secured contested boards?
Don't be wrong, I would be happy to see what you suggest but skeptical as to how well it would work with this team.
