Honestly, had you ever heard of "Nick Saban" before his arrival to LSU

Admittedly, I was not wowed by his replacement of Gerry DiNardo at LSU. Nuttin 'special at the time.

Perhaps I missed some facts at that point in time. Perhaps not.

If not, perhaps LSU had as much to do with his brand today as anything before his arrival to LSU.

What say you?

I ever heard of him until we played him in Shreveport in the Bowl game when he coached Michigan State. I drove over to the game.

This was also before the internet really blew up. Now you hear a ton about up and coming coaches.

Not only did I know him from the Independence Bowl, but i always heard his name as a candidate for NFL head jobs, and I wondered why because he kept having 7-5 seasons at Michigan State. But when LSU hired him, I trusted he was a good hire because if the NFL wanted him, why not us?

Yes, he was the DC/DB Coach for George Perles' Michigan State team in the early 1980s for a few years. Coach Perles made a name for himself with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the DL Coach. Ever heard of the Steel Curtain defense?

Then in 1991, he became Coach Bill Belichick's DC with the Cleveland Browns. Between those jobs and working for two "Prime Coaches," he gained a lot of visibility in the college and pro football world. Everyone in the industry stated that he knew the game of football very well. His problem at Michigan State was twofold: (1) Recruiting (2nd Team in the state and competing against ND, Ohio State, Penn State, and Pittsburgh for recruits); and (2) Entertaining NFL offers annually.

Remember, when he was coaching the Tigers, Coach Belichick would come down each summer to Baton Rouge and share with Satan the latest NFL defensive schemes, etc.

Are you joking? He coached against us in the independence bowl. I'm sure I'm not the first to point that out here. Geaux Dinardo!! He Schooled Saban! I guess Kevin Faulk had more to do with it.

Yes, LSU played against him in the Indy bowl. He was also considered one of the future up and comers as well as a great defensive coach.

He wasn't a secret.
