first of all, scholarships need to be changed to multi-year commitments. the fact that you can offer a kid a scholly and then take it away a year later to give it to a better kid is ridiculous. but that goes for all sports. now to the football specific part. they should offer full rides in this fashion: athletic department pays 50% of the scholarship over the course of the student-athlete's college career. the other 50% is paid in the form of a student loan financed through the NCAA. If a student athlete decides to forego his 4th season in order to enter the NFL draft than he is on the hook to pay off this "loan." if the student athlete stays his 4th season then the loan is forgiven. now obviously there would need to be some extra thought about what to do with the special circumstances that can arise regarding the system such as Jeremy Hill (a true sophomore who is draft eligible on the 3 year rule). injuries would also need to be addressed in some fashion. also how the NCAA would go about funding such a program would need serious thought. but, in the long run, i think such a program could help encourage the kids who should stay in school the extra year to stay while not really deterring the ones who are NFL ready from leaving early. Obviously the NFL would need to be on board in order to make sure that teams and agents didn't guarantee that they would pay off the loans just to get kids to leave early

p.s. - obviously this will never happen but lets just speculate

Some good ideas but the urban community could give 2 shits about having debt or paying back loans. Wouldn't stop a thing

frick off with this bs. It's their choice. If it were you, you'd be chasing the dollars too.

There's nothing to fix. You go to college to get prepared for the rest of your work life. Athletes have a short time to earn money, and if they can get a fat pay check they should take it. This isnt an LSU problem, its reality.

There's nothing to fix. The players are no longer incentivized to stick around and try to get drafted in the top rounds, so they leave. I don't blame them.

so what about all the kids who leave early and then wind up washing out before the end of the first season? if they would've had some encouragement to stay then at least now they have a college degree to fall back on

So.....OB leaves early to make MILLIONS and you think paying back 40K for his scholarship would stop him?

None of them know that will happen, they all think they'll be in the league for 10 years and never work again because that's what people tell them their whole life.

Fans are just as bad as the players. How often you get on this board and read....

Lael Collins...top 5 pick/first round lock
Freak Johnson.... First round lock
Jordan Allen....mighty beastly
Brandon Harris ... Will start at QB in 14

Maybe y'all should stop over-hyping these guys.

I think your idea is great tbh, but it would never happen in a million years.

You obviously cannot read. I specifically said that it would not deter such talent. That is the whole point. The best players could still leave early as being on the hook for student loans would not affect them but kids who leave early even though they should stay another year to get a degree/increase their draft stock would be encouraged to stay
