Here is an easy $62.5 million to address the states shortfall.
Posted by s-port tiger on 3/2/16 at 6:45 pm11457
F-King Alexander’s comments are all over the national sites yesterday and today. What a complete irresponsible fool he is to even give credence to the story that LSU may not have football in 2016.
According to this articles research LINK /, the other LA state schools athletic departments receive a total of $53,793,683 in state subsidies. Along with the $8,700,000 that LSU athletics gives back to the state, there is $62.5 million that I can free up immediately before LSU football is penalized $.01. LSU football is an economic engine worth hundreds of millions of dollars annually to the state. There is no excuse for even putting it on the table as it is creating nothing but negative attention towards our pathetically managed state.
It is time to close Nichols, McNeese, LSU-S, LSU-E, LSU-A, UNO, SUNO, Southern Shreveport, Southern Law, and Grambling. They can all become junior colleges under one very robust junior college system. That would leave the state with 7 public universities to go along with the roughly 5 private universities. There are many states with much larger populations than LA that have less than 7 public universities. It’s time to really trim this fat.
That should free up hundreds of millions of dollars annually or maybe even the magic $1billion needed to float the budget.
Or better yet JBE, why not call one of your magical special sessions and fix the constitution that only allows for healthcare and education to be cut. Thats the real problem here. Open up the books and cut the ridiculous fat that the state spends on state employees. Trim the state workforce by 50% and make people actually work for a living. Eliminate the many depts that have no value and consolidate like actual businesses do.
OK….i am stepping off the soapbox now. Thanks for reading…..

Jindal cut state employee numbers from somewhere near 90k to near 60k in his tenure.
LINK
Chew on that for a minute and realize if he had not done that where would we be?
BATON ROUGE – As Bobby Jindal prepared for his 2008 inauguration as governor, state government workers numbered about 93,500.
Today, that workforce hovers at 62,000 employees — fewer than it’s been in more than two decades. Spending on payroll has decreased by about $1 billion annually

You have to remember, most of those extra employees were Democrat campaign workers from previous elections and wives or spouses of Union members who campaigned for Democrats. Always was, I saw it three times face to face.

ULM, LA Tech and Grambling, 3 four-year colleges in a 50-mile radius in a state struggling with funding.

You realize that most of those numbers were unfilled positions?

really upset about LSU's leadership. the fall fiasco with Miles being pushed out and now this is just excruciating.
alleva should have never been placed at LSU. the fact he was is an indication that we have bigger leadership problems.
alleva is not a fan of football, so this sad fact has made it easy for our president to use it as a bargaining chip.
neither one of these guys nor the governor likely give a damn about Louisiana State University. this is about power and money for the perpetuation of that power. These two phonies--Alleva and Alexander--are doing their best to dump on Les Miles.
what I wonder is where is the TAF leadership in all of this? why have they not jumped in and defended the program to these underhanded tactics?

Maybe...BUT, a better SOLUTION would be to have ALL of our elected officials to FIRST worry about what's necessary for state SURVIVAL...make the tough choices and stop worrying about getting re-elected and "paying back" the special interests who "funded" them !
Maybe a total revamp of the state constitution around one or max 2 term limits for ALL positions !
We need STATESMAN...NOT the same old political cronies !

OP: I'm sorry, but your attitude (and lack of any perspective) is the exact reason we are in this problem. The idea you want a "robust" junior college instead of a functioning university system is problematic enough, much less the fact that you don't understand that you can't 'switch' a university to a junior college. This is similar to asking the Saints to "become" the Voodoo. The job qualifications for these two places are very different, as are the contracts. And if you are the type of person who says 'fine then, let the saints quality players go somewhere else so we can have cheaper voodoo players' then please see my first sentence.
I honestly don't even know what other parts of your plan to disembowel, (besides the ludicrous notion that lsu athletics can operate independently of the university (see ncaa)) because they are all so unfortunate and ill informed. I can say this, though: If you were to get what you wanted, you would deserve it.

CO had almost a billion in sales, but taxes collected, which is what would count for these purposes, totaled a little over $100MM. Would still be beneficial, unless the politicians pissed it all away, which is likely, as a lot of that tax money would probably go to school districts, and paying for treatment programs and law enforcement to help keep the potheads in check.
So, yeah, it likely wouldn't really help all that much...

Everybody needs to read the state audit that was done in December an then you will understand why the state is in a cluster now. So much incompetence on spending in a majority of programs. It's appalling.
