I'd say OSU is currently pretty deserving of the hype they're getting, wouldn't you say?

Harris had Ohio St in his top 3 out of HS and they really wanted him. He knows plenty about Harris.

You're talking about Harris the HS senior, a top recruit who everyone knew was super talented. I'm talking about Harris the college sophomore. We know the one in the middle - Harris the college freshman - wasn't ready to lead LSU to the CFP.

The Point: Herbie must be hearing from people inside the program that Harris is ready to play very well now. National analysts on his level don't have to just guess because they have connections.

Oklahoma

generally has top level talent and a coach that has been in "Big Games".

Gimmick offense, no defense. Play a team with a good defense that can match up....make a few stops, and you will dominate that defense. That type of team is tailor made for teams like LSU who control the ball.

TCU

Has a pretty decent defense, but offense is still gimmick.

Don't know why you would scratch your head. I would guess that OU has more NFL talent on their roster. People get to caught up in these gimmick type offenses. A&M was the same way with JM....until they faced LSU (twice).

yep. Also, on my online betting site (sbg global), LSU is now the 8th overall pick to win the NC...according to odds....but still can be had at a good price....24-1. Bama is currently 9-1. Ohio is 3-1.

well if you are looking at someone to beat them on their schedule....good luck with that. They are good no doubt....but it certainly doesn't hurt that their schedule is so fricking pathetic....not as hard when you have to only get up for 1-2 games.

I put a little more stock in his predictions, along with a guy like Kevin Steele. Both can be wild cards, but they are actually trying to do some analysis, rather than just making a safe bet based on recent trends. Teams like Auburn 2010, LSU 2011, and State and OM (at least through 9 games) last season buck those trends. When a talented young team gells and comes together, or gets that difference making player that puts them over the edge, it changes things. I appreciate that they are taking more risks trying to find those teams than just putting out more of the same.

However, the thing we should all be looking at are those Vegas odds. A talking head can recover just fine from a few bad preseason picks. Oddsmakers stake their rep on every pick they make. If they think LSU is going to be a contender this year, then you better believe there is something to it.

They aren't always right...but they are pretty darn close more times than not....talking heads say things just to be heard.....Vegas isn't in the habit of giving out easy money....

His preseason final 4 last year were

Florida State
Alabama
UCLA
Michigan State (Said he would have had Ohio State instead of Michigan State but picked a week following Braxton Miller's injury)

I agree with the rest of your post but your statements about TCU not producing NFL talent is false. They were also more of a pro style offense until before last season when Patterson decided to adopt the air raid spread.

quote:

TCU did not have a player selected in back-to-back NFL drafts prior to Patterson’s promotion as head coach for the 2000 Mobile Bowl. The Horned Frogs have had 32 players selected since then, including at least one in every draft except 2008.

But Patterson’s Frogs have become more than just NFL draft picks. They become NFL players. Of Patterson’s 32 draft picks, 31 spent time on NFL rosters, 29 suited up for games and 19 became starters.

quote:

So when 41 talent evaluators from 27 of the 32 NFL teams turned up in Fort Worth on Friday for TCU’s Pro Day, they weren’t watching draft prospects. They were watching future NFL players.

“The NFL knows what they’re getting when players come out of our program,” Patterson said.

The NFL was watching three Frogs in particular who will one day become players with the potential to start in the NFL —linebacker Paul Dawson, cornerback Kevin White and safety Chris Hackett. Patterson is a former defensive coach, and TCU is one of the few college programs still majoring in defense these days.

LINK

I get it. TCU isn't in the SEC. They are also fairly new to being in a P5 conference but they are as legit as they come. I'm not the greatest fan of the air raid either but it doesn't diminish the fact that their QB Trevone Boykin is a serious Heisman candidate this year. You could make the argument they were the best team in the nation just a year ago. That arse whipping of Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl was not a fluke by any means.

Nice how the article assumes we know exactly what each category means without any explanation like we all swing off Herbs nuts waiting for the Herbie nominations each year. WTF does "Looks the part" award mean?

All these pre-season polls don't mean crap...
Until we see all teams in action I will reserve my comments. Most everyone is throwing out opinions, and like my signature says "Opinions are like @$$holes, everyone has one."
