Has tailgating become more important than the game?

Out of curiosity, I started a thread on SEC Rant asking whether other fan bases leave the stadium early. BTW they do. The big excuse by LSU fans are traffic, heat, and I was too dunk and tired. There are many people who tailgate and never set foot in TS or the game is an after thought. Has our love of partying and tailgating over shadowed the game for far too many of our fan base?

Yes it has. It's 2012 and there are more important things going on. Espeacially the younger iPhone generation. It's all about social media and networking these days.

I am too old to get excited about being cramped in a stadium like a sardine. I'd much rather tailgate, watch the game on television and enjoy the atmosphere.

I thought LSU ruined the tailgaiting at LSU. That is what this board told me.

Yes, I believe so. I can understand people leaving early if the game is a blowout, the weather is bad, etc, but our fans leave early from games in which the outcome is still in doubt.

Tailgate parties are the "in" thing; the popular place to be seen for many. Hardcore fans remember the purpose for being there no matter how much jambalaya they're cooking or alcohol they are consuming.

I can never understand this, no matter how many times I witness it. The guy next to me, who has sat there for 20 years, left in the 3rd quarter of the "4th down game" against Florida because he wanted to get to Juban's before it got too crowded.

Tell me about it. People in our section left during the 4th quarter of the Bama game in 2010. As much as we hate the Gumps, you'd think that everyone would want to enjoy the moment in the stadium. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again even if we beat Bama this season.

That's a problem for you? I would have been rejoicing!

bull shite. when a tough team comes to town ant the game is a nail biter the fans don't give a damn if they're tired or not and they don't give a damn about the traffic. the lsu fan has seen many, many big games against big opponents. some games just ain't exciting. you pays your money (and lots of it these days) and you can do what you want.

Leaving when we're kicking someone's arse is one thing.

Leaving when the game is somewhat close, or worse, when LSU is behind is something else.

I really believe it is an indication that the games are not a big priority to some fans as they would like people to believe. I mean, would a deeply religious person leave church early? Would a dad leave his daughter's dance recital early. No. Why? Because they hold those things dear. A churchgoer and a proud father are no less entitled to leave early than a Tiger fan but they don't because it has so much meaning to them.

The leave early vs stay to the end debate is like the abortion debate. People believe what they believe and no matter what either side says they won't change their opinion. I'm stay to ender but understand the leavers reasons.

In my experience, there has always been a significant part of our fanbase for whom tailgating is the priority.

The event of reuniting with old friends, partying like you're back in college, and taking in a full day social experience is bigger than the game itself. Factor in that we're playing a nobody, everyone is wiped from the heat and alcohol, and the in stadium atmosphere doesn't offer much unless its a bigger game... And its hard to expect a packed house all the way through.

No. We've been messing with him ever since. Now during close games, he looks at everyone in our section and says, "I'm headed to Juban's. Anyone want to go?"

All these threads about attendance and no one talks about why it might be important to be in the stadium to support those guys who chose to come to LSU and who work their butts off in practice to win and represent LSU.

But no, its all about "me, me, me"

I enjoy tailgating as much as anybody, especially since I only get to attend a handful of games each season due to living out of state. However, plenty of people leave early regardless of the opponent, even if it's a big conference game. I don't get that. Their tailgates aren't going anywhere. In fact, it's a lot of fun for us to hang out after the game while we wait for traffic to die down.
