Was thinking how versatile he is and I think I remember him at 3rd once or twice a couple years ago.

I might be mistaking his gun for Hanover, however.

Katz has played a great 2B with JJ out.

Katz is a liability in the field at a top caliber program. He has done the job though and with his bat the way it is, that's all that matters. Let's not get crazy though. Katz is one of the worst fielders on the team.

How is he one of the worst fielders? He has made some great plays at first and second.

He played 2B in high school. And he is a very versatile fielder, as he's shown over the years.

Katz has done an admirable job at first even though its clearly not a natural position for him. Just glad he's not in the outfield any longer.

i haven't seen anything that would make him a liability

one of the worst starters, but the team is great defensively

Played 3rd in high school.

Jesuit's Katz opts for LSU

quote:

Katz, a third baseman, batted .385 with 13 home runs and 41 RBIs for Jesuit last season, when the Blue Jays (26-11) reached the Class 5A state championship game. He hit .404 with eight home runs and 38 RBIs for the Jesuit-based Retif Oil American Legion team, which won the Louisiana state championship.

That's scarily similar to where his stats must have been this year after as many games

I agree. This will play out in Katz's career as a pro. Katz is a great college hitter but LSU fans tend to see everything through purple and gold glasses. He is serviceable as a fielder on the college level. Don't make him sound like he can play great at every position.

False. That article was written after his junior year, hoss. He played 2B his entire senior season in high school. Sophomore Josh Faciane (now at ULM) replaced him at 3B that year.

He's a good fielder, but on a team of defensive stars he doesn't stand out. It's his versatility that is most valuable.

It's so nice when those with reading comprehension skills + knowledge respond in a thread.

I've re-read my OP several times and still can't find anything about Katz being studly, only versatile.

LSU is #2 in fielding percentage in the country and last I check Katz has held down 2 of the 4 spots all year. Pretty good work there, IMO.

ETA: I take it all back. I said he's played a great 2B and see how that could be taken as I think he's a great second baseman.

I was right. I saw this kid play like 25 times in high school. He hit a homerun in probably a little more than half of those games and he played 3rd or dh every time I saw him. I really like this kid as a ball player, but from my observations he is nothing special in the field. I'd rather see him at 1st or 2nd over the outfield like he played in the past. His "versatility" is due to the fact that he is lights out at the plate. He has to be in your lineup and he is more serviceable than other options.

I would have liked to see lsu get his high school teammate bubby Riley from Delgado, but he's going to nc st.

Statistics can be deceiving. I guess Blake dean was a great fielder too because we loved him and he didn't make a lot of mistakes?

not really a valid comparison since Katz has played the 2 positions in our infield and Dean was a DH and OF

Dean was left handed....he can play 1st, of, or pitch. The comparison was because of their ability to hit and just be fillers in the field. I'm afraid ,just like dean , that Katz will struggle to grab MLB attention due to his ability in the field.

Also, Katz played mostly outfield his first couple of years and mostly 1b now. Seems pretty comparable. They find themselves in almost an identical scenario. However, Katz being right handed allows him to do more.

I thought we were talking about what actually happened. Katz fields 1st much better than dean ever did. He has a sharp glove. Neither plays outfield well

that doesn't make him a liability at the college level though. He has never been a liability for LSU while playing infield. Dean played DH for LSU in 2009, so it isn't comparable at all
