My Dad went to high school with him at Istrouma in the 1930's. IHS was the first football team on any level to have a weight training program thanks to Alvin.

Yup, & more people should know. "1958" doesn't happen without AR. Heard stories that cannon & Taylor would sneak over to istrouma to workout because LSU didn't allow it. Not sure if true or if the timelines go together. But it's interesting

I believe it was Paul Dietzel who started LSU on a weight training program prior to the 1958 season. LSU was the first school to institute weight training for athletes.

In the summer of 1958, Alvin Roy had the following clients working out at his establishment on Oklahoma Street:
Bob Pettit, Jim Taylor, Billy Cannon, Johnny Robinson, Roy Winston and Norbert Roy.
Cannon and Robinson were working out on their own not as a part of the LSU team, which would begin a strength training program a year later.
