Is there a law that says one must attend the university that person cheers for? I've been a Bama supporter for 30 yrs and I never went there. I do, however, have a college degree, which I often suspect is a commodity that has eluded most of the posters
There's no "law" but it's always seemed damn silly to me to see people pulling for schools/teams that they have no natural logic connection to AT ALL (and it doesn't necessarily mean having to go to school there).
It just seems terribly lame, but I guess if folks just want to pull fandom out of thin air they can knock themselves out.

Alabama football is kind of like Duke or Kentucky in basketball where you get fans nationwide with no connection to the university.
I live in Louisiana (Northshore) and I did not see one Alabama bumper sticker, t shirt, or sign prior to 2008.
The morning after Alabama beat LSU at TS (2008) is when the Alabama plates/shirts start popping up.
The day before Auburn played Oregon for the NC, I see Oregon gear. After that game, no more Oregon gear.
Last year, ND gear. After the beatdown, no more.
Make your judgement.

Its really funny how bandwagon fans are- I worked with a guy who was a florida fan (not an alumni), until aubun started doing well with cam newton (also not an alumni of auburn). So he roots for florida when they are doing well, and auburn when they are doing well. I guess you cant go wrong if you have two schools to chose from?

I'll give another example... during the 90's I would see Dallas Cowboys gear everywhere.
Can't find it anymore for some odd reason.

One could make the argument about the Chicago Bulls gear as well. The 90's were more of a fashion statement to wear Dallas, Miami and Notre Dame gear.
UNLV and Georgetown were also fashionable as well.

See quite a few Alabama gear around Hammond, couldn't remember seeing it at all before Saban went there

I'm guilty of rooting for the Cowboys in the 90s. It was a bad faze, an the Saints were pitiful.

Seeing it here in Ga. Didn't know a bama fan 5 yrs ago.
Never heard of a Bama fan here in Georgia but now everyone and their grandmother rep Bama. A lot of the long time UGA fans around here even root for Bama when they're not playing UGA. Disgusts me.

There was a growing number of Alabama fans in Alabama as well.
Back in high school around here during Franchione/Shula, I had friends and knew other people who couldn't tell you what the yellow line on the field was.
When they finally snapped the streak against Auburn in 2008 and emerged as hardcore Roll Tiders all the sudden, I asked all of them "Who was the starting QB for Alabama the last time Alabama beat Auburn?". No one knew, and one of them said fricking "Mike Shula" when it was Andrew Zow.
I'm surprised they weathered the 2010 3 loss season.

It's not just Louisiana.. it's all over and especially Fat Women from Mississippi are all on the bandwagon.

Dude no one is saying there aren't plenty of LSU fans in NOLA. What we're saying is there's an unusually high number of Bama fans. I live there now. I see them everywhere. Its simply not possible that this many are actually tied to the school in any significant way. They are bandwagoners who for whatever reason hate LSU and/or Baton Rouge. It makes me want to puke.
It's true. For some reason a lot of New Orleanians, esp women, think Ole Miss or Bama are superior to LSU. I can understand leaving Louisiana, but not just to go right there to Miss or Alabama. i think mindset carries over to rooting for Bama.

quote:Not one thing said on a geek message board, has any effect on who wants to play for Nick Saban/Alabama. I think they're more interested in winning National Championships and being developed as an athlete to their full potential!
a lot of the same people that bitch and whine about Miles not being as good as Saban also tear down LSU and build up Bama/Saban every chance they get. So, when recruits (who do like to play on winning teams) continuously hear that, some make the jump to play for Saban instead of stay here (Collins, Robinson).

I've seen a handful around in Baton Rouge...the last place they should be.
They don't hide, either. I'm pretty sure I saw a car with the huge crimson A (with mullet) on their back windshield a few months ago.

NOLA never was and will never be an LSU friendly city IMO.
Nola is a huge lsu city, withe the exception of a few old timer Tulane fans, Nola is the most friendly lsu city outside of br. Where do you come up with this shite?

Walked around NOLA on 1/9/12 before the game. I wasn't impressed with the LSU turnout. Way too many Alabama fans and most of them had Louisiana license plates.

Well that right there is enough to form an opinion worth a damn. Nola is all lsu dude
