Gregg Doyel: "boot talented, troubled Hill" I’m not sure where to start. I think it’s beyond unfair to lump Coach Miles in with Urban Meyer and every other "win at all costs” coach in history. Coach Miles has released star players before. Most notably, Tyrann Mathieu before last season and Ryan Perrilloux back in 2008 (not to mention suspending starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson for four games at the start of the 2011 season because of a bar fight). In both instances, disappointing football seasons (by LSU’s standards anyway) followed. LSU went 8-5 in 2008 and 10-3 last year after being ranked as hight as #1 in the preseason by some media outlets. Miles knew, just like every fan, sports writer and commentator knew, that cutting those guys loose would have immediate adverse consequences on the entire team (including the kids who were behaving themselves) and he did it anyway because it was the right thing to do. As for Mathieu failing several drug tests before being let go, I don’t think keeping him around was all about winning. I think Coach Miles and LSU did their best to try and make sure that Mathieu didn’t end up like his father, a great athlete who ruined his own life because he couldn’t stay out of trouble. Mathieu has said on numerous occasions that LSU did everything they could to help him and I don’t get the sense that that was all about keeping him eligible. Don’t get me wrong, when you watch the Hill video, it’s hard to argue that he shouldn’t be suspended and, just as with Mathieu and Perrilloux, I wouldn’t be mad at Coach Miles or LSU if they let him go. But I hate the idea that if they don’t let him go, its only because they want to win. There’s no allowance whatsoever for the fact that maybe, just maybe, LSU and Miles actually give a damn about saving this guy from himself. Just my two cents.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to what Doyel writes. If you read his stuff, he is a bigot and has some serious anger control issues. His columns are meant to inflame. He is the Skip Bayless of CBS.

Well you are not alone.

quote:

Gregg Doyel writes for CBSSports.com and his columns are – to say the least – usually over-the-top, lack proper insight and, frankly, suck. He’s the guy who said that College Basketball as we know it is now over because John Calipari is at Kentucky. Yep, completely over. Teams like North Carolina, Duke and UConn? Shouldn’t even try. You need not look any further for evidence of Doyel’s douche-baggery than this post our friends at Deadspin put up in October. Well, he’s done it again. Doyel now claims that “there has never been a dirtier combination of college football and college basketball programs at the same time, than the University of Southern California Trojans.” OK, let’s dissect this slowly so that if Gregg happens to stop by this page he’ll be able to follow along.

I'll throw in that clown on WWL radio as well - Christian Garrick. This idiot spent almost his entire show the other night saying the same thing over and over - "Hill is thug POS and should be booted from the team."

Then that idiot plays an interview he did earlier in the day with Johnny Manziel - KNOWN THUG POS!! - and practically choked on Manziel's pud during the whole interview. Meanwhile, 3 days later Manziel is rumored to have been booted from the camp by Archie himself for showing up late to a team meeting.

Overall, the real problem with clowns like Doyel and Garrick is that they are given a platform at all. In Garrick's case he's just pretty much an ignorant joke when he's on. Two of his most recent shows featured him spending a couple hours castigating soccer as boring and useless; and calling out fantasy football players for needing FF to follow the NFL - which he doesn't play because in his words "I just don't get it".

And this is the loser they often send to cover LSU football.

I'll say this hill did something wrong and should face punishment. Kicking him off the team is to much.

To those people who say miles lets people get away with things so he is a bad coach is this respect. If miles lets people so this why do less of his players get arrested vs other teams. Seems like miles runs a tight ship if less guys get arrested compared to other teams.

I dont know what system anyone hides behind. The schools make policies. Its up to them to follow them. I dont know of too many universities that can do anything ab something that happens off campus.

If i get arrested, and i can still make grades and pay tuition, there isnt anything that LSU can do to me.

Its really sad, but I would guess more than a few LSU fans actually think this.

Personally as a father to 3 daughters I would have never given Hill a sholorship after his 1st incident. That should have been enough to signal what kind of person Jeremy Hill is. There is no doubt of his talents on the football field but I have zero respect for him as a human being. Miles needs to do the right thing and let him go for his own good. If he is only suspended for 2 games what kind of lesson does this teach him?

You don't even have to look that hard. Bama had a few guys arrested a few months ago for going around campus at night and jumping kids for laptops and stealing their credit cards. Not just scrubs either.

Not just that incident over the past few years I know a few of their players have been arrested within months of leaving college one guy 3-4 times as I recall.....

As far as Miles kicking players off that were high profile, in most of the instances, his hand was forced by the university due to school policy.

I agree. Moreso, what kind of lesson does this teach the team? Long story short, one strike should be enough. He's a damned thug just like JJ was. Time for him to go.

This man clearly does not research his thoughts. Willing to bet he saw the story on ESPN and just wrote down his opinion off of that. Miles boots players on a regular basis for bad behavior.

Heydude, do you have sons or daughters? If this black guy didn't play for LSU, I bet that you would want to throw him under the bus. The rantards on this site definitely have double standards. If Hill wasn't on the LSU team, would you agree with what Miles and LSU did? What if Hill was an ordinary black guy that did those accusations? I thought so. If you're black and play for LSU, you get free passes.

I don't get this at all. He's not getting anything less or more than any other Joe Citizen would with 2 misdemeanors and some probation. Some of you loons need to crawl back into your cracks.
