Greatest LSU Basketball team

I think the 1981 team is the best I've seen. Rudy Macklin, Eathin Martin, Leonard Mitchell, Howard Carter and Johnny Jones. Macklin and Martin were really great. They lost to the last undefeated team. Indiana with Bob Knight and Isaiah Thomas. They had it won. They should have won. I still remember.

I don't think there's an argument for any other.

They lost to Virginia too

I'm confused as to why that matters?

Talent wise the Chris Jackson, Shaq, and Stanley Roberts team is in the talk but as a complete team 81 was it.

Because they lost to Indiana and Virginia, two of the other three teams that were in the Final Four that year. You made it sound as if they lost to Indiana and then went home. They lost to Indiana then turned around and lost to UVA.
Best Basketball team at LSU? No.
1953
Bob Petit (24.9 PPG, 12.7 RPG)
Norman Magee (13.3 PPG, 4.0 RPG)
Don Belcher (12.7 PPG, 5.4 RPG)
Ned Clark (9.4 PPG, 10.1 RPG)
Benny McArdle (8.1 PPG, 2.9 RPG)

Indiana was also not undefeated that year. Playing that extra game for 3rd place back then had to be a tough game to get up for. That was a good idea to do away with it.

I remember where there was a period where when LSU lost in the NCAA Tourney, it was often to the eventual National Champion. I think they did it in 86 and 87 as well.

It was the 81 team they were almost unbeatable and were the best team in the country even though they didn't win the NC. Macklin broke his hand or something in the regional. That is why he was off versus Indiana.

Agreed! Loaded at every position. Cookie Monster at center I believe...(sort of like Dennis Rodman for the Detroit Pistons). I think back then they played a 3rd place game as well and we played Virginia w Ralph Sampson. They were very exciting and fun to watch EVERY game! This years Tigers were hard on the eyes at times. Can't wait until next year to see our freshmen play. Will be interesting to see if Martin returns (probably not). Mickey should be back so we'll be solid at every position. Could end up being one of best LSU basketball teams of all-time IF..... Martin and Mickey return for their junior seasons. Geaux Tigers!

Indiana went undefeated in 1976, not 1981. LSU was ranked #1 in the country before the tournament.

My freshman year so I remember it well, although all their names escape me at the moment.
Greg 'Cookie Man' Cook
Leonard 'Swat' Mitchell
Ethan Martin
Johnny 'Bullet' Jones
Willie Sims
Durand 'Rudy' Macklin
Howard Carter
Tyrone Black
Joe Costello
Dueane DeArmond
Bryan Kistler
Andy ? Campbell ?
John Tudor
J.Brian Bergeron
And if Dwayne 'Astronaut' Scales had not signed with an agent, he would have been back to. Hultberg had graduated the year before I believe.
Started off 26-1, including 17-0 in the SEC before losing the last SEC game at Kentucky by 2. Howard Carter was going for the tie from the left baseline but was fouled (no call) and UK won.
But LSU won the SEC Tourney, then beat Arkansas and Wichita State in the Superdome to advance to Philly.
'Tigers To The Top' was a track on an LSU songs cassette tape back then in March of '81.

With all due respect to O'Neal, Roberts and Jackson, the 1981 team was the best. I was a student at LSU at the time. I went to just about every home game that year as well as the games in New Orleans. We also went to Philly for the Final Four. One correction-- It was the 1976 Indiana team that went undefeated, not their 1981 team.
