Discusses Mike Slive, a weak Sankey, LSU-FLORIDA drama, and public scrutiny. Good read.

quote:

And he’s right, or he’s at least as right for refusing to surrender a home game as the Gators were to postpone theirs.

Just as the state of Florida was waking up to devastation, a portion of Baton Rouge is still displaced by flooding and emotionally flattened by shootings, police protests, state budget woes, and the looming death of their live mascot.
quote:

"I’d say for restaurants like ours in the community, it’s upwards of a $100,000 loss in sales compared to a normal Friday through Sunday," said Ruffin Rodrigue, a former LSU player and owner of Ruffino’s restaurant in Baton Rouge.

"Of that number, a lot of that is money going directly to our employees, most of whom are coming off the flood. We’re trying to catch up right now. This is the last home game of the season. It’s senior night. That means it’s a homecoming for a lot of fans and families."

His Ruffino’s location took on no water in the flood, but the Lafayette location did. A 9 p.m. post-flood curfew killed business across the city for almost a month.

"We were open for those three weeks, but no one could get here. The streets were flooded. Our sales went down 80 percent. But hey, still gotta pay your taxes and insurance, except there’s no cash coming in. So, everyone got really, really hurt. We need these home games to make good," Rodrigue said.

"These home games are critical to getting our head above water, so to speak."
quote:

This is a rare failure of management for the modern SEC.
quote:

New SEC commissioner Greg Sankey failed to control the public messaging from LSU and Florida. During a live interview with CBS on Saturday, he failed to provide insight into the league's direction, because at the time, there wasn’t one. When the postponement was announced, LSU and Florida couldn't even agree on how to describe the game's status.
quote:

The prospect of the SEC without Slive's balance is dangerous as hell for the conference. It’s fascinating for us, though.

The SEC should have never let LSU-FLORIDA drama play out in public
EDIT: Added some quotes :)

Pretty accurate. A little more emphasis on Foley behaving like a petulant child and it would have been really good.

agreed, but Foley's job is to look out for Florida.

It was really up to Sankey to mandate that the game be played Sunday or Monday. And he failed miserably.

The University of Florida is apparently creating a new varsity sport.

Dodgeball.

But they had to cancel their first match because they didn't have any balls..........

EXCELLENT... I thought it was getting props here for an LSU-bias, but that is certainly not the case.

Well written.

Great article. The guy that wrote this (Steven Godfrey) has an awesome college football podcast called Podcast Ain't Played Nobody if you wanna hear more of his stuff. Very insightful and funny. He actually married into an LSU family and goes to some LSU games.

And he should be slammed for his behavior in looking after Florida. That game was possible that weekend or Monday, Florida didn't want to play.

A very fair article blaming the real culprit, Sankey. Foley and Alleva were doing right by their teams, although I think most unbiased judges would side with LSU on the initial decision which was not reasonable. Once that decision was made, any other move at this point will disadvantage LSU. Sankey should have taken charge and contingently told UF you can have your home game on Sunday or Monday. and all this would be behind us.

I wish he'd have added a little detail on how the decision should have been made on Tuesday instead of taking a "wait and see" attitude. Still, Sankey failure, and he did cover that base very well.

What was LSU supposed to do? It's kind of hard to play a team if they don't show.

Good article. Thx for posting.

But I'm so tired of hearing this same carp over & over...everyone knows UFU "cancelled" the game for the wrong reasons & didnt make "every" attempt to make it happen on the scheduled weekend...
So they should just forfeit...
