i think the D is exactly the same during games as if Chavis would have been here (Orgeron has helped the dline attack better). We lack depth in the front 7, so if there's a team that can get the power running game going, they might be able to give us trouble. We will finish as a top 3 defense in this league.

3rd versus SEC and 5th versus ranked opponents last year, so....

So far this defense still has more potential than last year. FWIW we have the #1 ranked defense versus SEC teams this season.

Not even close! Our defense last year was awful. Many posters have explained why our defense was highly ranked, statistically, last year even though it sucked. Our offensive philosophy provides lots of rest and eats clock. By the middle of the year the defense was adequate. Last year's D was absolutely mauled by State, Auburn, and Notre Dame. Plus it gave away the game against Bama. How in the world can that be considered a good defense?

This year the defense is not yet great, but it's waaaay better than last year. Grade: B

I was about to say it's not quite as good as last year's but we haven't really got shredded yet this year like we did against MSU and Auburn last year.

Is our soft 4th quarter D the result of fatigue / lack of depth, or is it the scheme?

With big leads, are we giving up the 10 yard gains figuring as long as they have to drive the field to score there won't be enough time for them to score enough to take the lead?

I need to know the answer to this before I can assign a grade.

Defense gets an "I" today because while I have seen stretches of brilliance, I have also seen breakdowns and signs of malaise. Depth can be an issue on the line but there is a lot of talent. I don't think our D has had its real breakout game yet. Still hoping for more.

1st team defense is good
Second team not very good

Riley and thomas are not playing good right now.

Is it me or does Beckwith look slower this yr

last night did anybody see when we did the db blitz no one came to fill that space in and left it wide open.

Can we start mixing in herron and Gilmore more with our starters instead of playing them both at the same time

Everyone is lamenting our OB/passing game. Harris has outplayed his stats. Drops have been uncharacteristic. Have to think those will be corrected.

OTOH our defense has been mediocre at best by LSU standards. We are 25th in total defense. That type performance won't get it done against our November opponents. The ball control, ground attack LSU runs normally pads D-stats. Only saving grace there is we're only 45th in that stat. But the D has got to tighten up and get quicker to the ball.

Secondary and lack of pressure from the d-line are a concern going forward. They seem to not be able to get off the field at times. C- so far with lots of room to improve.
