Good article criticizing the coverage of Manti Teo vs. Tyrann Mathieu

LINK

quote:

The writer who did the most to popularize Te’o’s tale of triumph over tragedy was Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel

quote:

If Thamel or anyone else at SI had used Nexis or Google, they would’ve discovered that Lennay Kekua (not to mention her brother and sister) didn’t exist

quote:

But a reporter, especially at a fact-checked magazine like SI, also doesn’t generally put someone’s name into print and say that she smashed up her car on April 28 without confirming the spelling and the wreckage. That assumption of basic competence filters down to everyone else in the sports media ecosystem: If Manti Te’o’s story of woe is in Sports Illustrated, then it must be true.

quote:

And Te’o’s character, it seemed, was unimpeachable. After all, there had been all these stories about how humble and religious he was, and how he’d been led to Notre Dame to do something.

quote:

There must be sports villains to stand alongside the heroes, of course. That brings us to Pete Thamel’s other recent college football opus, and the other kind of confirmation bias. In the Oct. 22 issue of SI, Thamel and Thayer Evans wrote a cover story on Tyrann Mathieu called “Trials of the Honey Badger.” Mathieu, a 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist, was kicked off the LSU football team prior to the 2012 season, reportedly because he smoked marijuana. For the SI piece, Thamel and Evans went to Louisiana and performed the kind of dogged shoe-leather journalism that nobody bothered to do when reporting on Manti Te’o, humble Boy Scout.

quote:

The Honey Badger’s crime is smoking weed—he was arrested on marijuana possession charges after the SI piece came out—a practice that doesn’t land the typical college student on the cover of a national magazine. Mathieu’s father, by contrast, is in prison for killing a man. Thamel and Evans want us to believe, I guess, that Mathieu’s going to murder someone if he doesn’t straighten up.

quote:

The Honey Badger, like Manti Te’o, is a cartoon character. But since Mathieu found himself on the sports world’s naughty list—troubled athlete, at the crossroads—he was the athlete who got a vetting more suited for a presidential candidate.

I know I know SI hates LSU.

Thought it was a good perspective on "journalism" and how and when the media decides to actually do it's job.

ND is more important than LSU.

Very different situations in my opinion.

Why would anyone stringently investigate something like what Teo was claiming?

On the other hand, journalists have a responsibility to thoroughly investigate before publishing a negative story about someone.

It's not investigating necessarily, it's called fact checking. It's supposed to be a pretty crucial part of writing ANYTHING for publication. Especially for a publication like Sports Illustrated, I would hope.

That clearly did not happen in regards to Teo.

I think this whole thing is extremely confusing and I honestly believe there in NO way Teo had no involvement in this.

What I can't stand is how the media was extremely quick to label Mathieu as a villian and extremely troubled. While his story is much more cut and dry and Teo's is still relatively unknown I can not stand how the ESPN, the media, and other outlets are still protraying him as a victum. Like I said we don't know anything, but from interviews and stories from him, either he is the most shelter 22 year old in the history of the world or the biggest lying piece of scum.

unless te'o is gay, i'd be just as wary drafting him as i would be drafting tyrann if i were an nfl gm. te'o was completely exposed against bama, much like tyrann's lock down coverage ability being called into question, but tyrann at least had a season long highlight real against top flight teams. te'o garnered publicity based on his story. tyrann did it on the field with much more impressive numbers and was invited to new york DESPITE being suspended for a game. te'o piggy backed his way to new york being a notre dame player and the best story of the year. however, tyrann's problem is he's a pothead. that can be fixed. te'o, right now regardless of what really happened, has some serious questions as to his mental state. comparing the two, i'd be much more comfortable drafting tyrann than te'o. BUT, both have major red flags, and wouldn't waste a pick on either player in the first few rounds.

Looking for an obit or getting any family or friends reaction besides his isn't stringent investigation.

I wouldn't draft either of them.

Disagree. Tryann's problem is that he is stupid. That can't be fixed.

You know why. You have to know why.

I don't understand why LSU fans have so much trouble embracing our program's place in the WWE world of College Football.

Even if he is a complete victim in this, which I do not believe for 1 second, an NFL team would have to worry about his FUTURE mental state even more than his current mental state.

Dude is going to be destroyed in the media and stands for the rest of his career because of this. The mental strain on him is going to be OUTRAGEOUS. It will absolutely effect his on field performance.

If people want to pretend that isn't a factor when a team is trying to decide whether to invest in him or not, they simply don't know what they're talking about.

not really. in game one, claiborne saved one TD pass and we don't win without his interception. in the bcs title game, they picked on mathieu all game. claiborne might have given up a couple receptions in the title game, but he wasn't exposed at all.

Yep. And he had PERFECT position on 3 of them. AJ just made the perfect throw. Uncoverable.

People who refuse to rewatch the game yet continue to pretend they know anything about how it played out really piss me off.

a Republican or Democrat ... because there is a big difference in the amount of vetting.

Author needs to clarify.
