Mainieri botched the substitution part of that.

But as I said earlier, he did a wonderful job all game long tonight.

Okay Danno, whatever you say. i said it was a good call. But it wasn't gutsy. Do people call it gutsy when hockey teams pull their goalie?

Yeah that is really my only point. It was a head scratcher to say the least.

The 5 infielders situation literally happened last week in the MLB LINK

Give Jack Bicknell credit, calling for Doug Flutie to throw a hail mary was a gutsy call.

There was nothing to lose by doing it? Bases loaded a hit outside of the infield wins the game. Smart not gutsy

For as much shite as he took earlier in the season, he's pulling a lot of right strings these days

He scrambled around quite a bit to find the right fits on those 08 and 09 teams, and that worked out pretty well. CPM is definitely a tinkerer, perhaps excessively so at times, but I think its not properly acknowledged that it works out more often than not.

His 5th infielder "call" won't get any credit from me,

I'm not sure why it's getting credit from anyone, the 5th infielder didn't impact much. All those plays would have been made regardless of the move

That double play in the bottom of 11th was a thing of legend

You just can't do it can you? You can't compliment an LSU coach without qualifying it in some way can you?

The Ranters would say, he's a quick learner.

I just commented on the OP about the 5 infielders. It's not a new idea.

And if you have reading comprehension, I qualified the negative comment with the fact that Maineiri made some great decisions last night. If all I'm doing is commenting on the OP, I didn't have to do that.

It was the correct call, but in no way gutsy since it was the only call that made sense. Any ball hit to the outfield would have scored the winning run.

that came up huge for the team.

i dont mind the call because the chances of getting out of that are slim with any ball hit to the outfield, but how did it come up huge?

Honestly he could have brought in all the outfielders since a hit to the outfield would have scored a run.

This is every year with CPM. It takes some time to figure out the personnel, but he almost always makes the right tweaks down the stretch. He's done this countless times at LSU. Gotta give credit where its due

Gutsy call that we can celebrate because it worked...if it had not worked, he would have been criticized. So yeah, he gets credit.

Although, if Reid had remembered that there was a force and he only needed to tag the bag, not the runner, the bases would not have been loaded with no outs.

I assumed it was because Fraley had the weakest arm of the three fielders. If a shallow pop up happened then the other two gave a better chance of throwing out a runner. Center field is a more difficult throw since the mound is in line with the plate and can kick a ball off line easier than R or L field. Solid coaching decision even if a no-brainer in my opinion.

You're forcing the batter to take a different approach at the plate since they know a ball hit on the ground more than likely isn't getting through

trust in Stallings was spot on. Mainieri's gut was right on that one, and I will salute him for that.

I get frustrated that he waits too long to make changes on the mound at times, and it has cost us in a few recent post-seasons. However, last night is the other side of the coin. If he had pulled Stallings earlier, our bullpen could be a mess for the long run of this tourney. Glad he stuck to his guns this time.
