Fournette could have been number one overall pick in NFL draft as a LB...

Leonard Fournette might well have been the number one pick overall in the draft had he come to LSU as a linebacker. Running backs are generally devalued in the draft in recent years. Some reports have Fournette available even when the Saints pick at 11. Linebackers have a longer shelf life in the NFL than running backs and as a general rule tend to go higher in the draft.
At 6 foot one, 230 pounds, with sprinters speed Fournette could have been the best linebacker ever to suit up at LSU. With his speed he literally would never have to leave the field, indeed he is faster than many safeties in the NFL today. He might have been drafted higher, made more money and played longer if he had come to LSU as a linebacker.
My son and I did the radio for a high school playoff game a couple years ago where Devin White played. White has a different build than Fournette, stockier and more barrel chested. White was a great high school running back, few high school defensive backs in his division could tackle him once he got loose, even if they could catch him.
White was even more impressive at linebacker, he blew up every running play when he was in the game. I know White said he wanted to play running back in college, but I thought linebacker was his best spot. He would have been a very good SEC running back. I think in a way he was lucky LSU had such a need at linebacker and he went that route for early playing time. It may give him a longer career in the NFL.
When Guice and Williams go next year, LSU may not have a power back. I would definitely consider putting White in on offense in short yardage situations. He is a bull, but very quick. Even as a decoy he will make them respect the run.
But back to Fournette. He had a great run at LSU at running back, I am glad I got to watch him and am sure he has no regrets. I don't. We will never know, but I think as great as he was at running back, he could have been that good or better at linebacker. His blitzes would have been epic, the next Lawrence Taylor?
I think he doesn't make it past Carolina with the seventh overall pick in the draft, so it's hard to second guess his choice.

What if he didn't want to be a linebacker?

Fournette is a Running back. Not a linebacker. Make it stop.

Fournette is a football player who was a great running back. He could have been great at multiple positions, linebacker included.

Linebackers don't get the type of endorsement deals LF has gotten and will get over his career

"was a great running back"? Are you speaking in past tense? HE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST RUNNING BACKS IN THE HISTORY OF THE SPORT.

Linebackers get drafted #1 these days?

He was a great running back at LSU. Come on dude, I know you guys hate the post, but lets not twist it into me knocking on Fournette.
Devin White is a great running back too, by the way.
I am glad Fournette played running back at LSU, I loved watching him play.
I am just pointing out that he would have been a great linebacker too. The NFL uses up running backs like nobody's business. The punishment they take is brutal and it leads to short careers.
I do not think it unreasonable to point out Fournette could have been special at linebacker as well and statistically would have a longer career in the NFL.
Its funny how angry so many dudes get on this site about opinions.

Do you think inside LB's are a "top value" position?
Inside LB's don't get drafted No. 1. overall. In fact, it's been nearly 40 years since someone you could argue was an ILB was drafted No. 1 overall.
Likewise, 6'0 OLB's don't get taken No. 1 either.

LeBron James could have been a great wide-receiver.
Allen Iverson could have been a great option quarterback.
Randy Moss could have been a great college basketball player.
I get it. Next!

No, not necessarily. But if you follow the NFL drafts over the last ten years the running back position has been devalued compared to other positions. There are some exceptions where running backs have gone high, but overall there is a trend to them going later in the draft.
Running backs have an average shelf life of 2.6 years in the NFL, shortest of any position. There are very few running backs playing over age 30.

He's predicted to go top 5 ...this post is just bad!

Alright, hear me out. What if he was a kicker. With those powerful legs his kicks would have been epic.

You made so many dumb arse points. I'll call you out on the most trivial one. Carolina has pick number 8, not 7.

Are you related to chinyohang?

rbs may have been devalued in the past decade but that has changed recently.
unless fournette also grew 4 inches and 50 lbs while playing LB at lsu, he still wouldnt be drafted first overall. garretts measureables alone gets him drafted before fournette

Tom luginbill said if Fournette came out of high school as a linebacker he'd be the number 1 ranked LB in 2014

If... Cleveland needed a RB

probably so. but that has nothing to do with the nfl draft. he would be in the same boat as jabrill peppers.
