Eh not sure I'll give much credit to Joe for the Saban hire. If left up to him, DiNardo would have returned the next season

That quote in the article is directly from Herb Vincent. See quote below when Saban was hired. Bertman wasn't AD till 2001.

Joe gets all the credit for Saban. You couldn't be more wrong...

quote:

Nick Saban became the 31st head coach of the LSU Tigers on November 30, 1999, after five years as head coach at Michigan State.

Hate to hear that...I think his son is currently a sports commentator...

I think Joe Dean Jr is the AD at Birmingham Southern College and a color commentator for SEC Basketball games. He is a well respected figure in Birmingham.

I had the pleasure of meeting Joe Sr. a few years back.
He was a true gentleman and a great LSU fan.

Joe wanted to give DiNardo another year, Emmert made the call and also found Saban.

You couldn't be more wrong.

quote:

He had three great years, then the bottom fell out," Dean said. "A lot of coaching is about luck, and he didn't have any the last two years. I regret that. We had a good relationship. I really wanted to stay with him another year, but couldn't."

On the Monday AM after the Auburn 41-7 beat down of Dinardo's team in 1999, I e-mail Joe Dean - someone had posted his e-mail address. I was quite rude in my comments about his incompetence in allowing Dinardo to put a crap product on the field and went on to berate him for embarrassing the university and the fans. The e-mail was sent from my work address and the the signature contained my direct line at the office and my mobile.

Within minutes of hitting send, a woman called me and asked me I had sent the msg to Joe Dean. When I said yes, she said "please hold for Joe Dean". I ended up spending about half hour talking LSU football with him. He was a super nice guy and was very entertaining to talk to. In the end he agreed that Dinardo had screwed the pooch. He told me he would give my name to his secretary and that I could call back to chat from time to time.

So - after a few more losses, when it became evident that '99 was going in the tank, I called him back. I got his secretary. She asked my name and told me told me to hold. Within a minute, I was talking to Joe Dean again about the state of the program.

I cannot imagine anyone associated with the program now taking the time to return calls and spending that amount of time on the phone with a fan. Joe was a super nice guy and despite his hiring of Hallman, I have fond memories of the couple of discussions about LSU football I had with him.

RIP Joe.

RIP General

Condolences to General II (Joe, Jr.) and the entire family.

As many of you mentioned in earlier posts, the Dixie Basketball Camp was started by The General and continues today with General II at the helm. My son has attended and plans to attend for years to come.
