For those who keep repeating that Micah Gibbs "works for free," you're wrong

I was disappointed that Coach Mainieri decided to name Gibbs as hitting coach last fall, especially after PM said publicly that he had received numerous inquiries from not only college hitting coaches around the country, but also from more than a dozen current head coaches, when Cannizarro left to go to Miss St.

His decision remains a head scratcher for me.

But Gibbs does NOT work for free in spite of his title as Volunteer Coach. He is not paid directly by LSU because NCAA rules only allow for three paid on-field baseball coaches. For LSU those three are Mainieri, Dunn and Cain.

Gibbs is compensated for his part in helping to organize and participate in the LSU baseball camps and he also (eta: may or may not) receive a stipend from the baseball fan booster's club.

That compensation arrangement for the volunteer coach has been used going back to Skip's days as head coach.

It was a lazy hire, the timing gave paul an excuse to do it. This is not the first time paul has gotten lazy.

So, in other words, he's being OVERPAID.

Now I feel worse. Before, I at least felt that LSU was just getting what it was paying for.

I don't see any evidence to support your statement. It wouldn't have taken much effort to interview and hire someone else.

I think the decision was driven by Mainieri's desire to keep a sense of continuity considering that Cannizarro's announcement came the day before the Purple and Gold World Series began at the conclusion of the fall practice period. A new hitting coach would not even have seen the team practice together facing live pitching until spring practice began in January.

I was also told by several people that the team's experienced returning players lobbied for Gibbs to be named the hitting coach. That may have influenced Mainieri's decision.

I'm not saying it SHOULD have influenced his decision, just that it MAY have influenced his decision.

No, it's just an explanation to dispel the myth that Gibbs "works for free."

Like so many other misinformed myths perpetuated on the Rant, it's factually incorrect.

Other than Dunn who handles pitchers, our staff is very young. None have much experience handling every day players. None have worked much outside of the PM circle and thus everything is on PM. It isn't a good situation for a program of LSU's status.

Players lobbying to hire or keep s coach seldom works.

Agreed, hence my comment that the decision to promote Gibbs is still a head scratcher for me.

Just this past week an Advocate sportswriter referred to Gibbs' hire as a "battlefield promotion." I believe that's an accurate description of what happened.

A new hitting coach coming in after fall practice ended and not long before spring practice began would not have been an ideal situation.

I believe most of what you posted, and I would be 100% on board with the move.

But since this isn't the first time PM made a move similar to this (promoting from within with former players with little to none college coaching experience instead of going out and trying to hire the very best candidates) I feel this situation has a complacent feel to it.

And I'm not happy with the promotion of Cain either TBH for the same exact reasons stated above.

I don't agree that Gibbs' hire is a continuing trend by Mainieri.

Two of Mainieri's more recent "big" hires, Dunn and Cannizaro, were both from the outside and both were someone who never played for or coached with Mainieri.

In fact, only Cain and Gibbs were recent "inside" hires and they both came as a result of Cannizaro leaving unexpectedly in November.

Nolan Cain has the impossible job of convincing elite position players to come to LSU despite LSU making no $ investment in developing them.

You're right that he doesn't get paid by LSU and gets paid by the camps, but he doesn't get a stipend from Coaches Committee. Wherever you got that last bit of info, it's wrong.

well, I hope he finds some more help after this season...a good assistant would really help take some of the blame CPM is getting now...
I remember CAC wasn't a relished hire @ 1st, but i think tRant finally got over it...

Well, the volunteer coach used to get a pay supplement from the Coaches Committee. I assumed it was still the practice.

When I first joined the CC back when Skip was head coach, I had to sign a statement acknowledging and agreeing with the head coach was free to use the money anyway he saw fit to benefit the baseball program including using some of the money to supplement the pay of assistant coaches including the volunteer coach.

If that has changed, then I stand corrected.

Personally I'm worried about Cains ability to take over recruiting. He hasn't been to showcases, tournaments, high schools, not enough time to establish any kind of a network.

He'll be able to relate to kids but it's just something to watch this next offseason.

Russian I believe you are correct about what Skip did because other sports did the same things; however, somewhere around Saban's time in BR the NCAA changed the rules xnd I believe that now it is not permitted.

None of our coaches have La. roots, nor do they have much of a background in recruiting. Neither fact is good.
