In watching several NC team's play since 1990, I noticed the one constant they all have in commmon including this year's Alabama team:Outstanding OL and DL play.

IMO, both these units are the most important positions on any team destined to make a run for the NC game. Yes, more important than the qb position.

Why? I will use Bama as an example...Although Bama started a true freshman and several new running backs their offensive lineman protected their qb so much so that he was able to make plays on the go and the OL opened holes for thier RBs to keep the chains moving.

Likewise their DL reaked havoc on opposing OLmen-creating so much pressure that either the qb was sacked, threw the ball away, or threw an interception.

If LSU is going to get back in contention for the NC, we need to get the best OL and DL recruits.

No argument here. In the games we lost, we simply didn't have the muscle to compete in the trenches.

I mean, Saban gets it and that's the two positions he recruits the hardest. Miles never pushed either line. He fluffed his classes with athletes and receivers.

That was the one change O brought when he was hired as line coach, he took as many as he could until Miles told him to stop.

As good of a recruiter as most think Miles was, he didn't pay attention to the board and needs of the program. He went after the convenient athletes.

All LSU has done lately is recruit small, fast, showboat types. Great athletes but not meathogs that are needed to savagely maul opponents. And the meathogs we do have are not being strengthened or conditioned like kill machines should be.

No doubt Pine. We need play makers, but Championship are won and loss in the trenches.

During the Saban we were solid at both positions. In fact when he got here in 1999 he emphasized that we were small in the trenches and needed to get bigger!

Couldn't agree more!!! People get some damn excited about the parameter guys but fail to realize this fact! Should get 5 OL and 4 DL EVERY year. Build the team with the best OL, DL, and even LB'ers .....

We still aren't all the way there on the O Line, although Deculus looks like a great future LT. But Grimes has made progress on building the talent base that Studs let fall off a cliff back up. The biggest issue on the O Line the last two seasons hasn't been talent. We have that. It's been lack of balance across the positions and having to play guys out of position to compensate. We've played a natural tackle at center and guards at tackle for too long. Now that Miles is gone, we get to see if that was his or Grimes' doing. I am hoping it was the former, and that we see a lot of improvement next season because of it.

That said, I would put our DL class last year above Bama's, and if we finish with Wilson and Mathis, we will have brought in the better talent there 2 years in a row. Their LB classes are always ridiculous, but they are facing a bit of a drop off up front for the first time in a while.

Excellent analogy. I can't see how you figured that shite out. I never would have figured it out.

That was a very intelligent analysis of the situation. It is refreshing to have threads like your's instead of the mindless rants that pereates this site

The biggest discrepancy between LSU and Alabama is football IQ. Bama is king until Saban grows old and dies.

I disagree. Every coach is beatable even the great Saban. Don't get me wrong solid coaching is needed, but players execute and make the plays. I.E. Guice vs UF on the last drive. If he breaks it outside like the play was intended; POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME!

DB's don't win SEC or NC's, OL's and DL's.

DL is getting better and close to being there talent and depth wise.

OL is not even close. Deculus and Stewart are a good start, but it's too little too late.

Don't know if Grimes has what it takes from a coaching and recruiting perspective to get us where we want to go. I'll give him one more season to see how he does without Miles interference and trying to micro-manage the OL.

Don't know for sure how much he stuck his nose in OL business and screwed it up like he did with Offensive play-calling.

Do know that JG likes that Zone BS, which I don't think will consistently work at LSU. (It hasn't so far) Too many breakdowns in almost every big game.

We need more big uglies. I've never understood, and I know LA has some great talent, and I also realize we have recruited some from out of state, but why haven't we gone after a lot of the national OL and DL recruits across the country? Same for linebackers. We seem content on signing local 3 stars rather than going after every 5 star. If we did, eventually we'd hit on a few.

You strike me as a miserable person who hates everything and wants everyone else to be miserable.

Well your negativity doesn't work on me and I am happy to read about the future of LSU football (even if it has already been discussed) and have something to be hopeful for.
