I recognize we got dominated - at least for 3 full quarters and change, but:

IF we kick the field goal instead of going for it on 4th down -

AND we kick both the 2-point conversions and they're good...

That game was tied at the end of regulation.

Again - that doesn't change the fact that, particularly on the offensive and defensive lines, we lost a war against a Mississippi State team that, while improved, doesn't have 1/2 the talent that LSU has - on paper. They hit a home run with their QB on the recruiting trail - and it cannot be emphasized enough - there is no more important position in football than the QB.

State had the ball inside the 5 and didn't really try to score though

If 'IF' were a skiff I'd go for a boat ride.

As much as LSU was dominated, they still had a chance to win the game on the last play. Unbelievable.

Miles disagrees.

You realize this is all based on the belief that the game would have played out in exactly the same way. Do you really think that's the case?

I don't understand why you go for two when there is so much time left...

IF the score was closer (due to your kicking theory) then State doesn't put in their 2nd string defense. Therefore, we don't score that late TD's in the first place. And if they keep in Prescott and first team O they beat us by 24+. Take your pick.

You cant "shoulda" parts of an entire game and think the script would be the exact same. It doesn't work that way.

All good points about the game turning out differently, but if #10 pitches that fourth down option to #7, he scores. How does that change the game? If #16 holds on to that int, he walks into the end zone with a pick 6. How does that change the game? We win but still get dominated in the trenches?

24 is the only number where you go for two early in the 4th quarter.

8+8+8 = 24. If you can get 3 8's, you can tie the game. LSU didn't figure to have 4 more possessions when they got down 24.

If that was true, MSU wouldn't have pulled their starters. Simple.

I was greatly disappointed when LSU couldn't progress 72 of those when there were four attempts to do so.

mehh.. if we score that touchdown instead of getting stopped on 4th and goal.. then we're ahead at the end of regulation..
The real problem was the inability to stop them on 3rd and long. I realize this doesn't land squarely on the defense's shoulders but coming back from halftime, scoring a defensive touchdown on the first play, and then having a seeminlgy easy chance for 3 and out on 3rd and 13, but instead letting them convert and score, killed any momentum.
That would've put MSU on their heels and allowed our offense to at least move some. And I'm guessing eventually win that game.

"IF we kick the field goal instead of going for it on 4th down -"

with the possible exception of a "4th and inches" where a QB sneak is all but certain to get the first, I am a strong proponent of taking points early in games. In general, the risk just doesn't seem to be worth it until at least the second half. I feel the same way about going for 2, but in the State game, Miles was trying to make it a 3 possession game (8+8+8) when down 34-10. I have no quarrel with that.

They ran the same plays that had been working but the Tigers stopped them. Had the score been closer at that point they likely would have kicked the FG. Still, point taken. Les' stubbornness at not taking the easy points early came back to haunt them.
