FB in the slot? WTF?
Posted by DontCare on 4/21/13 at 11:31 pm00
did anyone else notice that connor neighbors lined up in the slot for one play in the spring game? and he was thrown to. weird.
it's the spring game, so i know that much of the play calling should be taken with a grain of salt, but do you think this is the sort of thing we can expect to see out of the cameron offense?
i, for one, would love to see a few plays where the TE motions to the slot to keep the coverage off balance, but the idea of the FB being thrown to out there makes me a little nervous.
what say you?

Copeland caught a couple of passes in the flat last year, why not put the FB out there at the snap?

Probably a variation of our hurry up offense we have yet to see in action
If we run that first play in the I formation but decide to play hurry up without subs then it would be nice to be able to flex out one of the backs to clear some of the defenders out the box

I say it was the spring game and everyone need not bring up every play and question why it was called.

Thats why it is called "Spring Practice"

LSU has the personell to run anything from
three wide - TE lined up tight and RB in backfield
three wide - TE flexed out and RB in backfield
threee wide - TE flexed out and RB in the slot
All this HUNH
"D" can't sub out between plays

I wouldn't mind seeing JC lined up as a HB at the goal line...

I would assume he was lined up as a WR because the WRs were split between the two teams, causing a shortage of WRs on each team for plays involving lots of receivers. Could have also been an audible for a play with more WRs and he was just on the field and was moved there.

That could be devastating for some weak linebacker.

i think you've missed my point completely. i'm not questioning the play and i even stated, "it's the spring game, so i know that much of the play calling should be taken with a grain of salt, but do you think this is the sort of thing we can expect to see out of the cameron offense?" but thanks for nay-saying my post.
and i'm fully aware that our FB has caught some passes out of the backfield. but being lined up on the line of scrimmage in the slot and catching a pass out of the backfield are two completely different things. my only concern is whether or not the FB matching up 5 yards off of a CB allows the CB to jump the route a little earlier and better, therefore being a bit more of a liability.
mcneil912, i agree that this on this may, indeed, be the result of splitting up the WRs between two teams.
the point i meant to make was that i can't remember ever seeing this before, rather than being critical of the play calling. has anyone else seen this done in a game? i watched a small amount of the ravens games last year and don't recall seeing this formation used there or in the rest of the NFL or in CFB.
Haydel, thanks for that input. interesting info.

The play is obviously practiced by the team so it's in the playbook. However the QBs called their own plays in the spring game, so I can't tell you how often you will see it in a game.

I don't see why this is a concern. The fullback in the slot can do more than just run a route.

Yes fullbacks have lined up in the slot before, sometimes the catch screen passes, sometimes they block, and sometimes they are an outlet.

I saw JC lined up there as well.

the quarterbacks called the plays and they were limited in players available for the various formations

they'll most likely have a linebacker or a safety on them. This is a way to go 5 wide and catch the defense with a run package on the field.

Holy shite, an offensive wrinkle? Something different to confuse people and get a giant man the ball in the flat?
NOOOOOO
