I wish apathy was a problem for our game, because the tickets are fricking insanely priced.

But looking at the Orange Bowl, just a sad sad state of affairs.

Interesting.

Just know that a playoff will move that apathy from the BCS, to the regular season.

Pick one.

Give the Orange Bowl the boot and make the Cotton Bowl the fourth BCS bowl.

Disagree, ATL.

Fans that go to regular season games are going to go to or watch those games either way. They'll pack em in in the sec. The big games in other conferences will draw, but they'll be down as usual.

The problem is having crappy teams in these bowls. Unless the big east champ is ranked high, whoever gets them is screwed. For the orange bowl, they're stuck with the acc champ. They can't even draw fans to their champ games, and the ones that go to that look like they don't want to travel to another big expensive game.

Thirdly, I wonder how much ticket prices are affecting this. I mean, my ticket last night was $125 for a seat in the upper corner of that stadium. I think I paid $150 for the 04 sugar for a seat that was on the 50 if I remember correctly.

Don't put crappy teams with crappy fan bases in the BCS. If you put teams with fans that will travel, no problem. Look at Ohio State. They have been in BCS bowl games countless times. They still show up and pack the stadium no matter what. If you fill the BCS with teams and fan bases like that, you don't have a problem.

Also, the elephant in the room: there are just too damn many meaningless bowls that water down the market and games being on ESPN all the time make them nothing special. All this spreading out for the sake of maximizing TV revenue has now made the whole end-of-season "bowl season" a joke.

It has nothing to do with the system, it has to do with the teams in the games. And shocking the ratings would drop when the games move from broadcast to cable.

This. Notice they didnt put up the stats for the sugar. Everybody knew that was a good game with good programs and they watched it. Everybody also expected the fiesta and its attendance to suck that is no surprise, and while the game was supposed to be better everyone expected the attendance at the orange to suck. I really dont think this needed an article on ESPN.

This is complete BS! As it stands, apathy sets in two weeks into the season when at least 60 of the 120 FBS teams are out of the hunt. By week three the best they can hope for is #25 or below on average. By week 5 the teams with truly legit shots at the title amount to about 20. So, 100 teams are now playing 7-8 games in hopes of 11th place or lower. Yea! Talk about apathy. Is college football the only sport where it's acceptable to finish #30? By week 7 or 8 there are only about 10 teams out of 120 that have a shot. How excited are the fans of the other 110 schools? Yea! Weedeater Bowl!

With a 16 team playoff there would be at least 30-40 teams left with a shot of making the field and playing for the National Championship if automatic bids were involved for 10 conferences or so. Far better than the 3 teams left by the last two weeks of the year as it is now.

Is this increasing apathy, or a reflection of a deteriorating economy? The fact of the matter is that people just do not have the extra money these days to take mini-vacations to bowl games and have to pay Walt Disney World prices for hotels, foods, drinks, and tickets.

This article talks about how the marquee BCS games have been affected. What about the smaller bowl games? I don't even know how some of them continue to operate.

ESPN's part of the problem. Putting the BCS bowls all on cable was never a good idea. plus they hype up these mid majors all season long so they will get a high enough ranking to get into a BCS bowl and they inevitably bring horrible TV ratings with them. I used to think they did that just to get at Fox, but they want to sink their own ship apparently.

Matchups have been bad especially since they added the 5th game. The Orange bowl has really turned into hot garbage, and the Fiesta is right behind it.

I don't understand the conf champ tie-ins to the orange(ACC) and fiesta(B12)...they are not based on any tradition and are handicapping the ability to create a decent matchup in these games.

Good point about the tie-ins; I haven't really looked to see how the matchups might be different without those.

To emphasize the proliferation of the bowls and the ESPN effect, I've been sitting here watching Major League on Comedy Central and just realized the Birmingham Bowl is on.

The PC bowl selection has screwed the bcs out of quality match ups. Many of the non bcs games have much bettter match ups. Death to the BCS system!
