Etling: Positives; Negatives

What impressed me the most about Etling was his composure in the pocket. Very good field presence. He can also sling it down the field and he pulls the trigger the instant he sees the open receiver - no hesitation. On the downslope, he did not complete a pass in the second half. Check me on this: he was 6/8 at the half and finished 6/14.
I'm optimistic about him, but I'm also realistic. What we saw last night was a stark contrast between deplorable and "pretty good". In his 2 years at Purdue, he was a 55% passer - the same number that Brandon Harris was criticized heavily for before the season started. I feel optimistic, but my jury is still out.
For the record, I still want Miles gone.

There were some drops in the second half. Guice comes to mind and Dupre there were a couple of big big plays that were drops. I love that he will throw the 50/50 ball down the field. We have NEVER done that.

It's all positive. His errors can all be chalked up to not running with the 1s in practice.
Can't give to much attention to the negative for someone coming off the bench.

To be fair, Etling has not prepared as the starter yet. I think he split reps with the 1s this week. But, there is a big difference between starter prep and backup.
I'll wait to see how he looks with a week as the #1 in practice and game plan.

After his "cramp" that had him limping off the field, Etling's passing deteriorated. Don't know if there is a cause and effect there or not. Just seemed to be the transitional point.

I agree
the play calls were different in the second half
Etling threw a bunch of long balls...
similar to what Harris does...those are not high percentage pass plays
3rd, why no dink and dunk to keep your QB in Rhythm?
4th, why under center and long developing pass plays? sack and fumble? this is not quality coaching.
Look i understand the coaches may be experimenting, but dang it, do that during practice or scrimmage
we have an SEC game next week
9 will be in the box to greet LF
Shot Gun and spread is the direction we need to be right now until this OL can pass protect...
most coaches just skip that...and play from shot gun 80% the game
I have no idea what our coaches are thinking

HE's a HUGE improvement over Harris.
The GUICE pass was slightly overthrown, tough catch,
JDM pass uncatchable overthrown.
DUpre interception, under thrown.

He showed some signs of being a good qb. It will be interesting to see how he fares running the base offense againat sec teams

Miles will have the QBs splitting reps again...Its a shame both QBs possess what the other lacks...If Etling had the arm strength of Harris or Harris had Etling's composure and pocket awareness, we would be in great shape

You gotta be kidding. You have seen Harris play qb's for last 2 years. We just saw Etling's for a little over 2 quarters. You already "know" just exactly what Etling's deficiencies are??? Come on. Wait for a larger sample size - AND SEC play.

He split reps with 1's way before this game.... Its not his first time with the 1's... Now it is his first gametime with the 1's

Arm strength is a disparity given by Cam Cameron during Spring practice, not me...simma down girlz

Not the same as being the starter on Monday! That guy gets all the preparation first nd foremost

Good points, there is potentially more advantages. D-16 can complete the short and medium passes and has the touch on the pass. With D-16 + open play calling I think we will see less loading the box. I Think there are some clear advantages with a D-16 versus B-6. It all depends on Miles allowing Cam to do his thing.

Upvote for that statement. He still needs to go.
