Does Johnny Jones know how stupid he sounds?

Saying that last season was a success.

Who does he think he's fooling?

He had the #1 pick in the draft and several other decent college basketball players and didn't make the NCAA tournament field of 68 teams. It was a 100% failure.

This disingenuous rhetoric is approaching Les Miles level. Why do these coaches continue to think that trying to be positive about everything all the time is the best approach? Listening to stupid comments like this is actually worse than losing the games, in my opinion, because I understand that winning is difficult. There is nothing difficult about speaking in an honest, realistic manner however.

You think he wants to inspire his team by saying how bad they sucked and that they should already give up? He probably doesnt believe that they were successful, but hes the face of something much larger.

I like Johnny. He's just not a good coach.

Most likely his last year at the helm.

So he's trying to fool his players? So he thinks they are actually that stupid?

How does saying that last season was a success "inspire" any player on that team? How is saying that last season was a failure telling them that they should "give up" on this season? Last season was last season. This season is this season. Whether last season is considered a success or a failure should have nothing to do with the success of this year's team. If anything, they should want to try even harder this year to make amends for that debacle last season. That is the mindset that I would have if I was a player on that team. I certainly wouldn't be sitting there thinking "coach said last season was a success, I sure am inspired to play hard this season now!"

Or maybe middle ground. Could he not state that:

quote:

Last year was a failure because the team did not perform as one. The team let their personal goals supersede the team goals. In order to be successful this year, we have to approach the game differently. We have to play selfless basketball, keeping the ball moving and ensuring that we take the right shots. To win, more energy must be exerted on defense than on offense. We have to compete with our opponents, not with our own teammates.

I'm not an awful coach, though.

I think last year honestly had too much talent that he didn't know how to handle it and instead of actually formulating a game plan he just let Ben run the floor which would have been fine if we had one more key player like if Mickey or Martin were still there but having one great player and having Hornsby injured for a good bit you can't just put the ball in one guys hand without a real gameplan and expect to win games

No, but there is nothing wrong with telling them that they didn't reach their goals last year and that significant improvements need to be made. If your child came home with an F on a report card would you tell him he did a good job?

You people who want coaches to publicly admit their teams shortcomings so that you can feel satisfied they he knows the team has problems are funny.

I have news for you. You won't like it. But, it's the truth. Johnny Jones knows his team is under-talented. He knows last year was a huge disappointment. He shares that reality. Miles knew of his teams shortcomings. He knew there were problems.

The fair criticism isn't that they don't know or that they don't admit it. That's absurd. No, the fair criticism is that they can't fix it or couldn't prevent it. That's reasonable.

of course last year was a colossal failure. Everyone, including Jones, knows that.

The rest is coach-speak and spin. He's trying to protect his job.

Interesting...

quote:

"I'm disappointed we're here and not playing in the NCAA tournament at someone's site," Jones said. "We came off a year where we went to the NCAA Tournament. We had players returning and a top recruiting class coming in. There was a lot of hope. We fell short and I assume all responsibility."

Any reasonable coach would say last season at least could have been better. Saying he has no disappointment at all makes him sound dumber than Les

What's wrong with saying something like:

We didn't finish where we wanted last year, but I like this year's team and our goal is to get better.

???

Yeah, a little transparency is so detrimental to a program.

This line of thinking only proves that LSU will always suck at basketball. Not making the tournament is considered a successful season

Nick Saban has no problem speaking in reality and he's been pretty successful.

Paul Mainieri has no problem speaking in reality and he's been pretty successful (despite what some LSU fans would like to believe).

Ed Orgeron has no problem speaking in reality while, at the same time, being completely positive about the future.

It's a myth that "coach speak" and "spin" have to exist in order to be successful. There is no need for all of that. It's dumb. And if a coach flat out doesn't want to ever say anything that could even possibly be perceived as negative, then just say "I am not commenting on that". That would be better than just making up lies to fill space.

Did he actually say that?

He basically said that last season was successful in many ways and then pointed to finishing 3rd in the conference, making the semi-finals of the SEC tournament, having a good home record, and having a huge jump in attendance-- as if any of that matters.
