Does anyone recall the 1971 game in Madison? 38-28 Tiger win over Wisconsin....

....in which their student body threw whiskey bottles at our players and called us racist pigs. I thought someone might bring it up two years ago when we played them but now that we're the away team I was wondering if anyone will remember.

Loads of insults that day. Some "Y" woman going in our gate exclaimed in a loud voice, "OH NO, we're going to have sit over here with these Southerners!" I replied, cheer up some of it may rub off on you. Other comments during game that had nothing to do with football. The program had a banged up tiger with 'LSWHO" on it. It definitely was nat a "glad to see youse guys" atmosphere.

I was looking for that program last night in my collection.
That was around the time LSU didn't allow black players, correct?

I do. and I think I remember a bottle hitting one of our cheerleaders. but I KNOW I remember the racist chants and the mob like atmosphere. I was not there but heard it described by those that were.
things sure have changed. in those days yanks hated southerners and expressed it openly. being a southerner was bad in their eyes.

Doesn't Wisconsin still not allow black players?

I was at that game. I remember it started snowing.

just after and many of the players that were called racists were black. I was a senior at LSU at the time. we had as many blacks as y'all. it's not like y'all were the beacon light regarding equal treatment or opening you're institutions up either. i'm not defending those days in the south at all so don't get me wrong. in fact many of us very much supported the equal rights movement that was going on around us.

Yes. Woman next to me nudged her husband and whispered like she'd been raised next to the sawmill," Loooook, they're all white. Funny, years later, we're mostly black, they still have two. No intent about our players or race..just a note on their Wisc. hipocriscy

That seems unlikely even in a northern climate like Wisconsin, as that was a September game.
But, 1971 was well before manmade global warming kicked in. I think I first heard the phrase "global warming" about 1985-86.

I was a Jr. At LSU and went to that game with 3pals. It was nasty before the game started and our players got hit with bottles, etc as they ran onto the field. But nothing happened after that and many folks were nice to us as we left. UW band refused to honor us in pre game as they always did in those days. LSU stopped honoring visiting teams the very next year (by playing their fight song in pre game).

No snow. But campus was shut tight due to the "weathermen" or some such homemade terrorist of the day. The week before they'd blown up a class building or some such that housed program with govt ties. At a young age and economically distressed , my buddy and I had driven from NC with plan to catch zzz's and a shower in some dorm. When we got there, they were locked due to the blast. Had to catch some guy going in and told him we'd lost keys. We did our best nasal accents. What I recall most was fact that we'd come with only one ticket thinking who'd come see LSU up nawth. The radio continously played a tape of AD Crazy Legs Hirsch selling the last ticket to lil Billy Vandenhorst the afternoon before. "Billy, with this ticket, this game will be the largest crowd ever to see a sporting event in the state of Whisk-co-sin".

Wisconsin records leading up to 1971:
1965 2-7-1
1966 3-6-1
1967 0-9-1
1968 0-10
1969 3-7 (lost first three games to go 23 games without a win.)
1970 4-5-1
started 1971 at 1-0-1
So the team had gone 13-44-5 before meeting LSU. It was a horrible program. Finally had a winning year in 1974. The name of the game was to go to Camp Randall and have fun drinking and passing bodies. If you knew the final score, you didn't have fun.
The crowds are much more tightly controlled now than back in the day. No doubt they will be pretty decent in Green Bay. The ES-FU chant being about the worst, and I doubt too many students will go to Green Bay so even if it starts, you probably won't hear it.

That had its origins back in the 70's when the freshmen sat in section O and older students would chant O sucks.
Anything to ease the boredom of another blow out loss.

This is interesting to read.
The UW band still does play the opponents fight song in pregame. Every time. Interesting they didn't that day.
Wisconsin has a mixed team, but whiter than most.State is mostly white. Milwaukee has not produced as many black football athletes for UW as NOLA has for LSU.
Camp Randall can be very hostile when the natives are restless.

Paul Lyons was the man. Great game running and throwing.

I was stationed in Germany but the student body actions at Camp Randall certainly rated a bit of a headline in the sports section of Stars and Stripes...

I was at that game. I was stationed at Ft. Harrison, Indiana and drove up for the game. At that time Madison was a haven for hippies. The student body had absolutely no interest in the football game. They were too busy passing students up to the top of the end zone among other things. Very different atmosphere.
