Anybody catch this in the Advocate? Dude is going to have a good year. His size alone will help his confidence. My pick for a breakthrough year and most improved on defense.

"The path to that goal began this offseason and continues during preseason camp. Divinity is up to 246 pounds, for example. He arrived at LSU last summer at 218.

But weight gain is only a piece of the puzzle. He’s getting stronger in the weight room, too, and growing smarter in the meeting room. It’s about being free mentally, Divinity said, “instead of sitting there and thinking too much on the field.”

I was encouraged immensely when I saw that weight chart someone had posted at the start of camp. All of our linebackers looked to have bulked up to prototypical size.

It would be difficult to make a worse pick. He's at a position that isn't used very much. He's had trouble learning that position, so I can't see him getting trained at one of the inside positions, at least not this year.

Breakout player? Maybe in 2018, if he can hold off Phillips, Taylor and Queen for the one open position that Devin White isn't manning.

Pretty sure he's behind corey thompson at that lb spot. He's not on the inside anymore...He'll be good next year though

Ad hominem. Do you have a substantive disagreement? I can't say anything bad about you, because I've never noticed you before.

Let's see...3-4 defense...he's definitely being used!!

Even in nickel...he's being used. Anything beyond nickel (knowing how smart Aranda is) he's in a sub-package.

"Divinity’s role this season is still uncertain, nearly two weeks through the Tigers’ three-week preseason camp. His position, the F-outside linebacker, isn’t on the field too often. The position exits when the Tigers insert a fifth defensive back, the nickel. LSU plays nickel “85 percent” of the time, coach Ed Orgeron recently said."

Add to this that the article said he didn't play a single snap against Missouri or Southern Miss.

Eta: Those two schools run a pass happy spread offense and the defense stayed in nickle or dime the entire game.

The Divinity hype started long before he committed to LSU and the promises his supporters have made for his performance haven't been borne out on the field.
Don't get me wrong, I want him to succeed and we need him, but the hype has been disproportionate to the performance so far.

His play hasn't borne out on the field? He was a true freshman last year. That statement can be made about a majority of true freshmen who see playing time. The speed with which some of you guys write certain players off so early is amazing. Divinity looked solid in the spring game.

We are suddenly getting very strong at LB. several good young prospects besides MD.

Yep, after one year. His hype was that he would be an immediate impact player where we had NO depth.
Has fans assessed him to be THE top LB recruit, despite D. White's promise.
In hindsight, if the bar has been lowered for Divinity, fine, that's probably appropriate.
And that was the point of my post.

I'm looking forward to seeing how he performs with the extra bulk. Linebacker is a tough position, but he seems to have the football IQ to enhance the athleticism. Plus having the tomahawk missile that is Devin White out there will only make Divinity better.

I would like to make it clear that my earlier comment was not in any way saying Divinity won't be a good player. I just wanted to point out that he won't be on the field enough to make the impact OP suggested. I really look forward to seeing him when he is in the game.

246 is good, really doesn't need to gain anymore weight. He is solid and now just needs to go out there and play ball and make plays if he indeed knows the play book by now. It will be fun to watch him, Chaisson, Delpit and some of these other young guys on defense get their chance to have an impact.

I love that he is 246, but that makes him 16 pounds heavier than Donnie. Just seems a little weird to me. But hey, I trust Aranda.
