Did we really play prevent on Bama's last drive?

LINK Start of Bama's last drive.

1st play. We show blitz before the snap and rush 4. We play tight coverage, McCarron makes a good throw and they pick up a 1st down.

2nd play. Again, we rush 4 and play tight coverage. McCarron makes a good throw and the WR makes an unbelievable catch.

3rd play. We rush 5. We do play a softer coverage on this play. We have 1 deep safety, and 3 dbs drop back about 10 yards. Still, Bama ran the perfect call to counter our defense. They flooded Mills' zone with a crossing route and McCarron made a nice throw to the guy Mills didn't cover.

4th play. We rush 4. We play tight coverage and we actually have Minter playing the RB. McCarron throws to the back of the end zone where the DB and WR get tangled up and fall down.

5th play. We blitz 4 or 5. I'm not sure if Minter was blitzing and he read screen too late, or if he just messed up picking up the RB out of the backfield. We all know what happened after the RB caught the ball.

We rushed at least 4 guys every play. We played tight coverage on at least 3 plays. Only 1 play, when we blitzed 5, did we play a softer coverage. People just need to give Bama credit. They made some great calls, McCarron made some great throws and their WRs made some great catches. What we played was not a prevent defense. At least not in the traditional sense.

No we blitzed and got caught with a perfect play call. Simple as that. In fact, if we don't blitz the screen is dead.

It was a misread by a freshman. Simple as that. He doesn't blitz (since he wasn't supposed to) that play would have been dead and bama would have been 3rd and 10.
Mistakes happen.

We may have been playing zone, but that was far from prevent defense.

No, it wasn't prevent. It did look like the CBs were giving 8-10 yards of cushion but that's understandable in that situation. A lot of idiots call any zone defense prevent, especially after a team scores on it to win the game. I give a lot of credit to Bama for that last play call. We brought the house and they had the perfect call against it.

The only complaint I had was why so soft on the outside? That is where they had to go with the football with no timeouts

Great thread and "prevent defense" is really an nfl thing. In the nfl they will play soft zone and let you complete passes in the field because the clock doesnt stop on first downs. In the college game nobody really plays a prevent defense except in Hail Mary plays.

Let's quibble about what to call what happened. Is it "prevent" is it "zone" is it "soft" defense? Bottom line, LSU stopped playing the type of defense they had been playing all 2nd half to play this thing we saw on Bama's last possession. If it wasn't "soft" and giving them short passes, I don't know what would be. If that's not "prevent" so be it. If it isn't "zone" so be it. Whatever you want to call it, LSU got soft and let Bama in.

The first three throws were to the same receiver. we were playing him 10-12 yards off.

good job Jawja...we can't let these guys discuss generic football topics/terminology and take the focus off how much the coaching sucks and how we'll never win anything again!!!

BS. Go back and look at the first two plays. We have tight coverage. On the 3rd play Mills screwed up. They threw the ball where Mills should have been.
