I think everyone gets so caught up in how much talent our players have out of high school and forget to realize what great coaching can do for players from the time they graduate high school to starting in college football.

I think our regime under Miles has failed miserably in developing talent up to it's full potential. Look at JJ for example, the best game I might have seen him play in an LSU uniform may have been his freshman year in the GTech bowl game.

We all just assume that JL is as bad as his freshman year; assuming the guy has not developed mentally or physically.

If high school players see what I am seeing, our recruiting will suffer immensely down the road.

maybe you are cherry picking the player to make your point. why didn't you select nevis or baker? why didn't you select ridley or barksdale? football players (indeed, athletes in general) are not mathematical formulas; they are human beings. they accept "coaching" at different speeds due to their limits, physical as well as mental. attitude and desire are paramount and basically, non-coachable traits. there is no magic at any position, esp. QB.

excellent post...Williford is another good example, and some on the recruiting board didn't think Blue would ever see the field at running back.

We actually seem to develop our lesser players much better than our highly touted recruits. Yeah our qb.coach sucks but brick is doing great on the d line and.chavis is known for developing linebackers. I feel good about frank and billy too.

Ok...Peterson is a freak, no development really needed there.

I should have limited the post down to the offensive side of the ball.

Randle doesn't look much improved (but really not given the chance with poor throws)

Tolliver is a 5 star recruit, has not lived up to it.

Sheppard is still dropping passes. His big plays are only due to his raw talent.

Richard Murphy has been the guy with all the talent for 2 years now and I haven't seen anything that supports that yet.

Our O-Line has not been close to impressive the last 2 years.

Then of course our QB progression...no comment needed.

True. Some players have developed and some haven't. The only real indication is how the overall result looks. If your ranking in February is consistently higher than your ranking in January, then you're likely not developing the talent you're getting as well as other teams are.

I do agree it does appear our coaching staff has a hard time developing talent. However some of that can be attributed to the player. Some players don't have the motivation or have simply peaked in high school and can't compete at the next level. All scouts know that some recruits peak in high school and theres nothing you can do about it. The trick is to recruit those guys that are on the verge of breaking out and develope them to their full potential. In my opinion this is how coaches should be judged. Choosing talent and developing that talent to form a successful team able to win games. In my opinion our staff does a decent job at this, but is still not on par with the elite programs.

ahh, the development angle again. It wasn't long ago, maybe april?, that mike d. and the kansas city chief writer bashed our coaching staff for not developing woods, dorsey, jackson, bowe, ect.

I believe mike d, said woods is a freak athlete that just lacked good coaching and he was about to get it with the saints. This is why the saints traded up to get him.

where is woods? hmmm, think mike wears them black and gold glasses?

fast forward to sept., dorsey puts on a show last night against the favored team in their division. jackson was no slouch, either. where is the out cry saying lsu DID develop these player?

how dumb, peterson didn't need development but others do. you have guy's like francois, adams, mitch joseph, p.j., willerford, hurst, claiborne, montgomery, sheppard, ridley, all getting better and performing well. however, the staff can't develop t.t., r.s., r.r. ect. maybe they qb just can't get them the ball? r.s. does have 3 t.d.'s on less than 20 touches.
