Since it appears that LSU is stuck with Steele for now, is there any chance he might change up the scheme slightly? I almost think he needs to look at using a healthy dose of the old Bears "46" defense, because he has the perfect 46 (Doug Plank for the 1980s Bears) in Jamal Adams. Another consideration might be the old Double Eagle Flex defense made famous by Dick Tomey at Arizona. This scheme is capable of several looks that could be confusing to inexperienced opposing QBs.

What say you?

I think he have to feel better about the defense after the last game.

We looked like we knew what we were doing for the first time all season.

WR were getting picked up after going in motion. We played a lot of man and it worked. I think Steele just needs to keep it up.

We were playing one of the worst o lines in the SEC. Our de's were getting pressure vs aTm and their qb was having to rush his passes. I would take our defensive performance vs the Aggies with a box of salt.

Let's see how we perform vs TT. Steele was a failure when compared to last season.

still a valid point about the db's playing man to man. I can never remember a good lsu zone. I can remember it being tried and dropped because we didn't do it well.

we play a helluva man to man though.

another thing about the zone - a decent qb with time can hit receivers moving into open zones. got to have some kind of a pass rush for it to work.

so I agree with everybody so far.

That defense would get destroyed in this era of spread offenses. Having 3 guys in M2M coverage against 3 WR sets would result in several deep ball TDs a game. Defense is college football isn't like play station. You don't just play a defense. You have rules and principles that get you lined up properly against any formation. For example an odd front team isn't just gonna stay in a 3 man front against 2 TE. Those OLB are usually gonna walk down making it 5 man. At least 1 for sure is going to walk down making it a 4 man. There is so much more to it than just calling a defense.

Just to set the record straight, I know nothing about any Playstation games and will never play one. My point is that other than the A&M game, LSU did not consistently stop the run and gave up at least twenty points in every other game. I also did not mean that it should be run the way Buddy Ryan originally designed it. Chavis used variations of it in the Game of the Century in 2011 at Tuscaloosa to slow down Trent Richardson.

Ehh we were pretty good against the run 9 out of 11 games. The issue in the 2 games we struggled wasn't scheme it was depth at DL.

There's no doubt that DT depth played a part, as did the use of DEs who actually should be LBs, and LBs who probably should be at S (I realize a lot of that is leftover from Chavis). Even though the rush defense might have looked good statistically, there were too many instances of not being able to stop even average to good running attacks in short yardage situations. And if you're going to stop the power running game like you see with Alabama and the Hogs, it's going to take showing them something a little different.

I don't think our biggest problem has been staying on a man this year.

What is positive to see is that the DBs new who to cover.

A lot a lot of our yards game because the TE went from one side of the field to the other and our safeties and LBs had no idea who's man that was.

We were actually much better at that against A&M

Alos i think we have had a 28 sacks this year with is a huge improvement from last year. considering how thin we were on the OLine and at LB this is pretty positive stuff. Arden Key had more sacks in SEC play than Myles Garrett had last year.
