Debate Settled: Tyrann Mathieu was a consensus 3-star

...before he committed to LSU.
I went back 1297 pages on the Recruiting Board to July 22nd, 2009, the day Mathieu committed.
He was a consensus 3 star on Rivals, Scout & ESPN and some RB posters were freaking out there wouldn't be spots left for higher ranked targets.
The very next day on July 23rd, after Mathieu committed, Rivals rightfully boosted him to a 4-star.
Scout never re-ranked him and kept him a a 3-star.
ESPN kept him as a 3-star as well and lists it as part of his legacy of ascension: "He was a three-star prospect coming out of New Orleans' St. Augustine High School in 2010, a 5-foot-9 cornerback many deemed a bit short to be a college star."
So for the contrarians, when posters use Mathieu being a 3-star to say, bolster their argument du jour that stars aren't the end-all or when they use it to say LSU has a knack for finding diamonds in the rough, do yourself a favor and STFU.

Rivals had him as a four. He didn't have many big offers though, for awhile at least. A lot of sunbelt school offered. Tenn. liked him and I think Bama started showing interest late.

Not when he committed to LSU. It's in my OP. That's the point of the OP.

247 didn't exist then and Rivals was the only respectable recruiting service...

Kind of a random thing to take that much time to research. Was there a recent discussion on this topic? And when I say recent, in the last 5 years?

I see. I remembered back in 2010 when he committed how he was a four on rivals. I didn't know that was done so soon.
I remember specifically checking his offer list though and he had a lot of small school interest. He really started blowing up at the end of his recruitment because he was owning camps left and right. I think Tennessee was his first big time offer if I'm not mistaken.

Rivals also listed him as the best cover corner in the country
A high 3* / marginal 4* isn't an insult
He was highly thought of and got offers from big programs
It's as if LSU Fans try to create this made up story about him. 2* to highest paid safety in the NFL. It didn't happen like that.

And Rivals waited for a major school to accept his commit before they changed their 3-star ranking of him.

It had more to do with his camp circuit

I maybe wrong but wasn't Chavis recruiting at Tennessee and when he came in he pushed for him?

Say what you want about Scike, but he said Mathieu was the best player in the state before his senior season started.

Chavis joined LSU in 2009
Kiffin, Orgeron, and Frank Wilson were at Tennessee

Yep, They saw him covering Landry at a camp in Tennessee, and I think went to LSU the next week, and I think Frank Wilson was all over him, and got a commitment. Rivals guy had seen him at the Tennessee camp, and put their ratings in to a 4 star that week, but it was more off the evaluation from the Tennessee camp..

Kiffin and O were at Tenn at the time, because I remember O jacked Janzen Jackson the year before.

Yep
Frank Wilson is also the reason Jarvis and Freak came to LSU. They were rock solid Tennessee leans with him there

Let's try yesterday.
This comes up more than you think because it can be used to make many different points. Still it annoys me when some are so emphatic about him starting off a 2* or always being a 4* and they are dead wrong.

No doubt.
Barton Simmons was at the Tenn camp and I think Rivals would have eventually upgraded him based on Barton's evaluation.
Still it took Miles offering a scholarship and Mathieu accepting it on the spot to make Rivals re-rank him quicker.

He was ranked as a 4* after he camped at Tennessee I think

Technically, you are not wrong.
But more accurately, he was changed from a 3* to a 4* by only one recruiting service after he committed to LSU.
It's in my OP.
