Danny Etling's performance last night

19/30 for 216 yards. About 63%. Not bad considering he threw some away. Obviously he needs to work on the deep ball and he better learn to slide. Can't keep taking those hits.

please work on not taking hits

If he connects on 2 of those deep passes we are looking at 21-30 300+yards 1-2 TDs . Its all going to come together

I said "please don't be hurt Etling" too many times last night.

Etling needs to take heed of Kenny Rogers' wise words this week:
"Promise, my son, not to do the things I've done. Walk away from trouble when you can. It don't mean you're weak when you turn the other cheek. I hope you're old enough to understand- Son, you don't have to fight to be a man."
We all know this kid is tough. I'm sure the team knows it, too. He needs to quit trying to prove it to everyone. Sliding isn't cowardly. It's smart.

Our receiver quit on one of those deep balls.

And yet people were bitching about him not hitting passes last night.
When was the last time an LSU QB had 30 passes in a game and 19 completions?

Imo, Etling's most impressive stat was TOP of 42:36.
In order to do that, it meant DE was pushing a lot of the right buttons on offense, which kept the chains moving.
Good job.

Long story short: 60% completions for 200 yards is EXACTLY what people have been saying LSU needs for years now. And they're right.
You don't have to throw for 300+ and 4 TDs for your passing game to be feared. One thing that Miles did have right is that - with the RBs and defense that LSU has - LSU does not want (or need) to be a quick strike offense.
LSU needs to use short and intermediate passes to keep the defense honest, open up running lanes, and control the clock. LSU wants to keep their defense off the field so that they stay fresh all game long and dominate like they did last night.
LSU doesn't want or need to hit 60 yard TD passes and have 2 minute scoring drives. They have the horses to run a balanced offense which will always be the most effective.
The key to last night was that LSU was actually unpredictable with their formations and play-calling and they were effective (or at least, effective enough) with the short passing game.

U nailed it. To go from "solid" or "decent" to "good" he will need to hit that deep ball

Agree except for this. We don't need to try and LIVE off big plays like OM does. Even A&M has gone away from this now, and it's working for them. However, if you can hit a couple of 40+ yard passes a game, even if they don't result in TDs, that's when you go from effective to a nightmare for the defense. When they have to move their safeties back, the middle of the field opens up like a book.
This is what the people complaining about the reliance on short passes and lack of an intermediate passing game are missing. Until Etling proves he can make a defense pay deep consistently, they will keep their safeties up enough to create traffic in the middle. It makes it more difficult to find holes in there, which is what makes the shorter passes more easy and safe. Hitting one or two deep balls a game will fix that. The safeties will have to move back a little, and will know that crashing the line is a risk. That one second that they have to check before moving is ALL the difference.
That is the next step for our offense. If Etling can open the field, then the whole playbook is there to run at will, even against a good defense.

I'm glad he's our quarterback but he sucks on long balls.

Let's hope that has more to do with getting 2nd string reps and few with Dupre and Dural, and less with physical ability. Time will tell on that, because they proved last night that they will take shots downfield.

Etling is "Light Years" ahead of what we've had in recent years in terms of Reading Defenses, Accuracy, Throwing catchable Passes, Going through Progressions and Quick Information Processing skills.
He's not a finished product by any means, but will get better with time.
The play of the team last night and the noticeable difference in what Etling brings to the table, is an even bigger indictment on the incompetence/negligence of the former Head Coach.
