Coach Brown demonstrated what the human spirit could accomplish. An average coach but his relentless positive outlook in life was addicting. He was the champion of the little guy, the underdog. He was Everybody's Rocky Balboa.

Dale brought hope to the program. He sold faith and togetherness with characters like John Williams, Don Redden, Derrick Taylor, and of course CJ35 and Shaq. He had his crazy moments with Tito Harford and jose Vargas. It was never boring sans the last five years or so.

Coach went to two FF's and for some reason, was the only college coach or administrator willing to stand up to Bobby Knight. How Knight intimidated people , I will never know.

Dale helped a depressed young man during one of his radio shows. Dale takes to the troubled youth for like six or seven minutes. That how Coach brown rolled. He helped people since his own father wasn't around when he was growing up poor in North Dakota.

Dale is a teacher and a preacher. He was successful because he cared about others. When he leaves this earth , it will be a difficult sad day.

As much good as he did for the program he also hurt in the later years. Those first couple years john Brady had horrific squads due to scholarship sanctions imposed from Dale Brown. He was a great motivator, however an average coach. That 1990 team was the biggest underachieving team in the history of LSU basketball

i agree with this. I had great respect for the man that built the program but he basically brought it back down to where'd it was when he arrived. I can forgive him for that now because looking back those were some very entertaining years. He probably should have retired about 5 years before he did.

Is this a new book by Dale? If so I will buy it and read it. I read "Tiger in a Lion's Den" many years ago. How do the two compare?

As an old fart, I am ambivalent about Dale. I certainly respect him for what he did in building up LSU's program from the bottom of the scrap heap. And, yes, I respect him for his genuine love & care for all of his players, particularly in their post career yrs. Too, he was a genuine giver to any & all that needed help in many ways & not just those at LSU but around the country. Yet, he could also be almost ruthless in protecting his program from those he perceived to be attacking it. His behind the scenes battles with Smoke, when Smoke was Skip's assistant, was totally uncalled for & quite harsh in nature. The NCAA's came down on him so hard not only because of his open attack on it ( calling its investigators Gestapo Bastards in a national sports mag was only asking for it) but, too, they knew what was going on in his program, well beyond any Lester Earl issues. Their issue then much like it was now is proving its case. Does anyone really think tbat John Williams came to LSU from Calif out of love for Dale or LSU? Chris Jackson's "recruitment" went on well beyond the time he enrolled in school. Was the Cookie Man given more than a few breaks while eligible? And finally, if I wanted Mother Teresa to be my head basketball coach, LSU should have hired her. I do respect him for what he did for LSU. But he was/is by no means a saint in a lot of catagories.

Dale's tenure ended badly but it wasn't entirely on him. Lester Earl has since admitted he lied to NCAA investigators to put LSU on probation because he was pressured by the organization to get Dale. It's hard for me to be mad at Dale for sanctions caused by NCAA malfeasance and their witch hunt.

But the last few seasons went bad because of a string of injuries to Randy Livingston and Ronnie Henderson. Those two, particularly Livingston, were every bit the hyped recruit but never panned out due to constant injuries. That was what sunk his last seasons there (well tha, and the most selfish team I've ever seen - Jamie Brandon and Clarence Ceasar are two of the most unlikeable players in LSU history).

He probably hung on a year or two too long, but his first losing seasons after that run of tourney appearances were due to some unforeseen circumstance. He had earned a pass on that.

The first kid he recruited was Collis Temple. Recruiting Collis led to Kenny Higgs

Sorry, but your history is incorrect. Collis was recruited by Press Maravich. Brown coached him only his latter 2 seasons.
