CPM was quoted in today's Advocate as saying the staff hires of Cain & Gibbs was planned & in place for a while, as he knew AC was going to be a HC at some point. AC having made that clear when he was hired. He wanted to separate the two positions, recruiting coordinator & hitting coach, as by having only the one position, the hitting coach/recruiting coordinator would have to leave games late in the season to recruit per the recruiting dates set by the NCAA. This way Gibbs can stay & coach hitting & Cain can get on the road to recruit. He & Gibbs had been talking about it as far back as Gibb's pro days, but neither had thought it would happen this fast, AC getting a HC job so soon in his career. He also defended Gibb's lack of experience by saying that none of his predecessors had coaching experience either & all the hitting coaches, per national stats, had doen a great job.

This has the potential to be great for LSU in the long run. AC gets to cut his teeth until LSU comes calling after PM retires.

Gibbs was a great hitter when he was here. Just really wish we could have gone and got a semi-proven guy for a top program like LSU.

Semi-proven like say......Andy Cannizaro was when he was hired?

Gibbs will be fine. Or he won't. But his level of experience right now is no indication of his future success.

If the Gibbs move works out it will be a homerun hire due to his youth and ability to interact with the players and recruit.

Cain can get on the road to recruit.

Sounds like a risky move considering his expertise at coaching 3rd base.

It's noble of Mainieri to give young coaches huge opportunities to start their careers.

The concern I have is how many games will inexperienced coaches cost us?

With timing of AC departure LSU would have narrowed the pool considerably. I'm ok with Gibbs.
PM does a pretty good job of hiring assistants.
He has way more hits than misses in that department.

So far, but a recent ex LSU coach also made good hires until the cronyism got a stronger foothold amidst said coach's stubbornness.
