Trying to remember what he said about schools like Lsu being at a disadvantage with private schools like TCU. What did he mean?

In other words, LSU has been playing really well lately so can someone please provide me with something that I can criticize CPM about? Thanks!

A 50% scholarship at Vandy or TCU is worth more money than one at LSU.

They can give more money in scholarships is what it boils down to. That's an over simplistic explanation but you get the point.

How does that give them an advantage for a player that receives a 50% scholarship? You do realize that the 50% that the player has to pay is much greater and Vandy or TCU than at LSU?

IF your kid has a choice to get an education and play for a national championship at a school for half of the tuition are you choosing LSU or Vandy? Even if you would have to pay more at Vandy than you would at LSU you are still paying less than you would at full tuition. This is a very over simplified reason and there are probably more complicated reasons.

Boy...don't I know it! TCU is not cheap.

Lots of good baseball players come from well off families. Vandy has kept a bunch of guys that everyone though would go pro because they are pitching their families that they can get a top flight education instead of a few hundred grand in bonus money.

OTOH, a half-scholarship to Rice or Vandy could make it affordable for a player to get an education at an academic powerhouse.
Face it. Many baseball recruits come from affluent families who could handle half-expenses at Rice or Vandy--and would choose that over cheaper half-expenses at LSU.
Of course, TOPS has helped LSU with Louisiana recruits, but that could be changing.

Scholarship B is getting better gas mileage.

HOW is that an advantage??? That means the player foots 50% of the tuition bill which is close to ~$20k a year.

And for years, Bertman would get top MLB draft picks to choose LSU b/c they could be coached by the US Olympic pitching coach while getting an education, instead of riding buses b/w Podunkville and Crab Apple Cove.
Much ado about nothing.
We don't even want to get into their living arrangements at that time.

First, it wasn't in Omaha. It was a 3-piece season closeout story by the Advocate a couple weeks later. This was just one of the controversial statements he's made.
The problem is that it's not something the fans see. He's dealing with this in kids' living rooms. Now that many administrations are putting money into baseball, it doesn't work to just say, "We have the best crowds, we have the best facilities, we have tradition" because it's not night and day like it was before. Many of these places that are successful (UCLA excluded) have put a lot of money into their program. Nicer or as nice as stadiums are out there compared to tBox. Crowds can be just as big elsewhere. Want to know why LSU stopped releasing actual attendance? I can't remember a single game this year that was truly a sellout which only a few open seats per section. That just didn't happen. So now that all of these teams are on a more even playing field, the private schools can tout education to these middle/upper class white families who may value that enough to push them over the edge. Not to mention that these schools have other ways to financially help athletes outside of the NCAA athletic scholarships (which is a travesty in itself).

Vanderbilt makes perfect sense. If you value the college aspect then you get to go to Vandy and live in Nashville. What I haven't figured out is how UF gets so many kids to choose college over the draft. I know Florida as a state is a hot bed but why UF instead of going pro?

quote:O'Sullivan recruits on the basis that he will improve your draft stock and make you money. He will never, ever overwork a player. He can tell these pitchers to come to him, win a lot of games, pitch with other stars to share the load, stay close to the beach, enjoy the weather. He makes deals concerning how much to use these guys. Tells them they'll be taken care of much better than riding around the country in shitty buses playing double headers twice a week for a few years. Come here, get drafted, and you'll be up to the pros just as fast. It's mostly BS. But BS works on a 16/17 yo.

No matter where you live at in Florida you are no more than a 2-3 hour drive from some beach.
