Could our bullpen be worse than last year?

I know it is early and we play midweek games early in the season to learn, not to win at all costs. But, what is expected of the bullpen this year? I was hoping we would be better than last year, which was pretty bad. My concern is that with several legitimate starters, they will not get the work they need early on to be ready when we need them late in the season.

It seems like middle relief has been sketchy these last few seasons.

We need 1 or 2 pretty dependable guys to get us to Newman. I'm not too worried about it.

I'm more concerned about having a legit 3rd and 4th starter.

Just 2-3 solid guys in the BP and we are good to go. It's not having that 3rd starter in the post season that has really hurt us.

A 4th legit starter? Find me one program with one of those.

I'm sure Vandy and/or Florida has a 1st round draft pick red-shirting

Our weekend guys looked pretty good.

Just sucks that Kiel got rocked, he may come around later. Got high hopes for the kid with that arm.

Strall and Norman have always been really inconsistent, i.e. this weekend Norman had a decent inning.

Hess and Todd P. looked good.

I think we have quality 3rd guy in Walker, but Gilbert looked pretty decent too. Just getting to the 5th inning is all we need out of those guys. Lange and Poche will probably consistently get to the 6th maybe 7th.

Last night it was in the middle , let's hope that can be fixed . And another area doesn't fall off the rails . ( long season )

My biggest concern was lefty relief out of the pen and it still is.

Norman was good last night, I don't know why he's being grouped with Strall's garbage arse

We must of not watched the same Hess

By legit 4th starter I mean a person who can win a game in a regional against a 4 seed. Or a person who can give 5-6 quality innings against mid week opponents. Not saying we need a 4th guy who can go out and beat Florida. However, we do need a 3rd guy who can match up with their #3 and get a win.

Kiel, Hess, and Reynolds have been inconsistent, at best, this spring. I'm sure Dunn wanted to see if they would do better in a real game. Questions are starting to be answered for these three. Strall has struggled since last season and continues into this one as well it seems. We'll see more of the bullpen tonight and hopefully they will perform better than last night's pitchers. This is a testing period for all but several proven pitchers on the staff.

Norman's was good last night,

1.2 innings and he hit one guy and gives up a 2 RBI single to another.

The first hit he's given up all year. And those weren't his runners.

A college baseball season is too short and the number of innings available is not going to afford Kiel the opportunity to work on commanding his pitches in live action. I don't expect him to be a contributor this year at this point. He just looked like he has a looooooong way to go.

Just my opinion.

He gave up a single timely hit on a night when the opponent had how many hits and how many runs?

So he faced 7 batters. 1 hit. 1 hbp. Neither of them scored. That's pretty good by most standards, no?

Kiel is a JUCO transfer who is likely here for 1 year to work with Dunn and go pro. Like a Will LaMarche who only threw 26 or so innings in 24 appearances.

The #2 or #3 starter generally pitches the 1st game in a regional against a 4 seed, sometimes we've even gone "Johnny Wholestaff" in those games. Did that against Lehigh in 2015. A 4th starter is only necessary for a situation where you're in the loser's bracket of a regional or the CWS. And you're kind of behind the 8 ball in that situation regardless. I think Gilbert is capable enough to be in that role to give us 5 solid innings. He pitched fine last night, going 4 innings and only giving up 1 run on 4 hits with no walks given up. Hunter Newman can also probably throw 3+ innings, if necessary, in a situation like that.

But there are probably only a couple of teams max that have a legit 4th starter on their team. Most teams struggle to find a reliable 3rd starter, much less a 4th
