I remember watching this cat a few springs ago. Really impressive. Looking for him to have a breakout year. Anyone else agrees?

Hey I just remember watching practice and was impressed by this dude without knowing who he was. The injury bug has got him, but I'd think with him being healthy, a six year senior, and under Arandas system he ought to be able to cut it loose and make some plays. He was always in position and I look for him to hold the edge and be a ball hawking linebacker.

Kid is a stud should be good this year.

He's going to play a lot this year at F

Yep great size and speed for a backer!

I think F linebacker is a more natural position for him than safety was. I expect him to do well, he has bulked up significantly I remember he posted a picture on Instagram.

Might be the only guy on our team older than the BYU players.

Aranda was talking him up in the interview with Blair. I think he'll be on the field a ton in passing situations.
Aranda said he's one of the best pass rushers on the team. For a guy who enrolled as a safety and hits like a LB he gives you pretty tremendous versatility on the edge.

Idk if you're being sarcastic or not, but O said we will be playing in the nickel 85% of the time and the nickelback replaces the F linebacker. So even if he gets 2/3's of the reps at F it would only have him on the field for 10% of the defensive snaps.

I watched him when he played safety. He always seemed like a linebacker with closing ability, ball hawk skills, and seemed more comfortable around the line of scrimmage then back deep.
Like I said, had no idea who this dude was when I watched practice. Went home looked him up, and have been waiting to see him play ever since. I think with him being healthy, a new position that better suits him, 6 years experience, and a DC with a reputation of getting the most out of his players... I expect Corey to be like a Duke Riley/Ali Highsmith like player.

I'm no formation guru as far as nickel or F personnel are concerned, but it seems like it'd be an advantage to leave Corey in either way. If he can play both the F position and Nickel, then leave him in so the offense can't determine when we substitute whether we're lining up in nickel or not. It also seems like it'd be very easy to disguise one for the other and let Corey roam without indicating if he's dropping in coverage or coming on a run/pass blitz. If blitzing, run defense, and shallow pass coverage are his strengths then this ought to play right into his hands . If he knows his X's and O's, and he should after 6 years, then all he's got to do is play. Watching him practice he was definitely one of the better athletes on the field, the only reason we never heard from him is due to injury and always having the star studded cast DBU.

Yep, it's situational. Some are applying the positional labels a little too rigidly, I feel. Thompson is cross training at F and Buck. Many other guys are as well. If we run nickel or dime, Corey can slide out, replace one of the DBs and still provide versatility in space.
In certain situations maybe White (or Alexander) comes off, and Thompson is one of your two backers. In other situations Key might slide down to end and you have Thompson playing Buck.
There will be other times where Key moves over to the F and Chaisson comes in at Buck.
It all depends on down and distance and the opponent, but the talent we have at LB gives Aranda plenty of options.

Can admins just edit your title? Wtf? I didn't include the "...looking for him to have a breakout year" and all of a sudden it's there. I'm not even mad, just befuddled.

If Lou Tepper had Corey Thompson at drop linebacker, things may have gone differently. Thompson is a great athlete and a ballhawk. Hope he lights it up this year.

"can admins edit your title..."
Yes. Its actually a good thing most of the time. A lot of threads get started and the title doesn't clearly state what the whole conversation is even about...
