Coaching Issue – It’s Not as Black and White As Some Think (long)

When considering a replacement for Les there seems to be this (wrong) assumption that the next guy will replicate all the good things Les does and simultaneously avoid/correct all the bad things Les does. He recruits his backside off year-in and year-out – not just good classes but outstanding classes. Even in LA one should not assume this is automatic. It’s not. Even a slight drop-off here will have huge impacts on Saturdays. Point being, most of what a HC does, Les does very well.
If Les hasn’t succumbed to the “ten-year rule”, then the quickest way to get to where we all want to go (think championships!) is for him to get over the ghosts of ’08. And use the incredible talent he’s amassed. He has all the empirical evidence he could ever want in hand – ‘my offensive philosophy does not work year-in, year-out.’ It is not realistic to wait for or demand the kind of talent we had last year on O before it can function. The championships are right in front of us – within reach. IF, he would only shift his philosophy on O – not another OC change or other coaching change (he can even keep Ensminger on staff). That’s about 99% of what it would take to get us there.
There will come a day when Les will say farewell to LSU. I like Les. Good guy. I’d prefer that day come on a high-note and not all the ugliness of being forced-out. But if he refuses to change philosophies then the day of an exit strategy is upon us already.
(Maybe I just needed to vent, errr rant.)

philosophy v. longevity - the decision he will make or someone will make for him.

Better coaching will offset that. I'd like to take that chance. Chances are we can still recruit as good. With better coaching we absolutely can get better.

Great post, about sums up my thoughts

Our preference isn't to get rid of him if Les would quit being stubborn and play to his players strengths, but he sticks with the same plan come hell to highwater and doesn't change. He hasn't changed yet so don't see it happening in the future, thus the fans asking him to GTFO.

His offensive philosophy technically isn't bad, and it goes well with a dominant defense. A power running game combined with a dominant defense is always a winning formula. I mean shite we were still in the Arkansas game until the 4th quarter despite no offense at all.
But it also requires accurate QB play. When you only attempt maybe 20 passes per game, you better hit well over 50% of them. I don't know how they're practicing the passing game, but it needs to change. This play action, 1 WR route just isn't working. Either AJ needs to learn how to read through his progressions or we need to see what Harris can do.

I don't want to get rid of Miles, he's too good at what he does & Ive seen how hard it is to replace coaches & maintain "traditional powerhouse" status, ie Texas, Michigan, USC, Florida. Miles doesn't need to go but his philosophy does. He believes that a strong running game, great defense, great special teams, & minimal risks on offense are enough to win. Problem is, in the SEC, that's not enough, you have to have a qb who can not only manage the game but change it when he is needed to. Sometimes I think Miles has the same approach to QB's as Saban does to kickers.

The only reason we want him gone is due to the fact that he keeps proving that he is unwilling to change. If he would have shown a willingness to adapt the last few years, every body would worship the guy. I kept telling myself it would happen, but you could only stay blinded for so long.

Until we ink Dylan Moses or Alleva is gone, I'm not sure anything should be done.
Les would be friggin perfect if he would just be willing to bend once in awhile.
Like, maybe, down 17 on the road with 3 minutes left!!!

I think people see our offense last year and say
OH we need that level of talent for it to work.
But there is a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE gap between Mettenburger and Jennings.
And there is also a huge gap between Mettenburger and JJ and JL.
IF we can get abs in that range our offense can still work.

On paper, I agree. But the empirical evidence is in. It doesn't work (frequently enough) on Saturdays.

We all said this in 08/09/10 timeframe, then when the talent peaked we rolled through 2011. Les was on top the world. Now we're in another valley. Never has he, nor will he, change philosophy imo. Its what he knows, its what he is.
PS - clear proof is that if he didn't change after 1/9/12 then he NEVER will. This year's Arky game looked exactly like 1/9/12 and we never tried anything different, not personnel or playcalling. We just froze again like a deer in the headlights and were not able/willing to try anything else.

I think people look at recruiting rankings and keep saying Les is a masterful recruiter. But is he really? A team at the level of LSU shouldn't consistently have gaps in recruiting at key positions. An example of a key position would be QB.
We had Andrew Hatch start a road game at Auburn. Let that sink in.

All problems are solved if we throw a coordinators salary at QB coach and have this guy in charge of all asprects related to QB's including recruiting

We aren't going to beat Bama without elite recruits.
End of story.
If we replace miles we can't sit and pretend better coaching and weaker recruiting will win out.
The teams that are winning championships have both.

Options:
1. Miles can change.
2. Miles can't change.
I'd much prefer 1 over 2, but we have a lot more evidence supporting 2 than 1. If he can, why hasn't or doesn't he?
Hell, I'm still looking for a legit reason why Harris didn't touch the field Saturday.
