Yet they got rid of him and hired him back? Saban has repeatedly hired, rehired and promoted the man.

Hmmmm, promotion to Defensive Head Coach!!! and Associate Head Coach!!! Yay me! Who needs to be DC?!?

Oh me, I guess, because I left those positions to be DC at Clemson.

Let's weigh these... I was DC, but got "promoted" to other positions the next year. Then the following year I chose to not honor those "promotions" and become DC somewhere else. Maybe they weren't really "promotions".

If the guy sucked so bad and was demoted the 1st time he was at Bama, why did Saban hire him back after his stint at Clemson? Answer me this.

1. He got a raise at Clemson.
2. He got to run a D without Saban hovering over him.

But you need to put the title in there for context.

2007 with Saban, he is DC.
By 2014 he is linebacker coach.

He should stick it out - a few more promotions and he may be towel boy!

He didn't hire him back as his DC. If we hired him as a director of player personnel or linebackers coach he'd be a fine hire. This is such a hopelessly stupid argument. He could be a bad DC but still be good at other things and useful to the organization.

He hired him as a recruiter. He was not DC. Kirby took that job from him in 2008 after Steele failed in 2007.

You always hire recruiters when possible. You just give them made up job titles and don't let them run your x's and o's.

Frank Wilson is a great coach for LSU. Tremendous recruiter. He has a job. It's not OC or DC though.

I don't know what happened his last year at Clemson, but to be fair, Steele's first two defenses there were pretty solid. Not great, but not catastrophes either.

Again, I'm not super excited about this, but he's supposed to be a great recruiter and seems at least capable of fielding a decent defense. So I don't think it's quite as hopeless as people are making it sound.

Clemson had the 13th best defense in terms of points per game in 2010. LINK

Of course, he's also capable of fielding a bad defense...

ETA:

2009(Clemson) 314 yards 20.4 points per game
2010(Clemson) 320 yards 18.8 points per game
2011(Clemson) 394 yards 29.3 points per game

Still not impressed compared to:

2009(Chavis) 328 yards 16.2 points per game
2010(Chavis) 307 yards 18.2 points per game
2011(Chavis) 262 yards 11.3 points per game
2012(Chavis) 308 yards 17.5 points per game

He wasn't Clemson's DC in 2012.

Way to leave out 2013, the worst year we had under Chavis.

But I guess we can't leave out Steele's worst year at Clemson.

After Steele was fired from Clemson as DC and re-hired by Saban, he didn't even get the co-DC back.

That's what you do when you want someone on board but don't have a spot for them at that time. It's actually, like, a compliment.
