In other words, how successful does he have to be after following Chavis to be considered a good hire?

To me, more wins. Regardless of actual ranks. I would be three losses on the defense last year including bowl game, some even say the Bama game which would make 4.

I think if we lose 3 or less games next season then it was a success. Especially a 10 win season

I mean he can only tie Chavis D this year. #1 in the sec this year but I felt that we were a middle of the road D. I mean alburnt blew us out and our D laid an egg. Yes Harris wasn't given a great game plan to start. But they did what they wanted to do. I am tired of watching bama beat us on the last drive of a game in tiger stadium at night.

What makes him successful or not depends on what happens while he is at LSU. The past is just that, past. The present and the future are what matters now. GEAUX COACH STEELE!

#1 SEC defense is misleading when the defense was the main culprit in 3 of our losses, and you could argue Bama as well. They had their moments (most notably Ole Miss) but didn't really feel like a great defense overall.

Winning is the answer, and to do that consistently, we need a defense that is stingy as hell on third down. I'm not happy about Steele, but he did say as much. Keep them behind the sticks on first down and make teams operate outside their comfort zone.

With the (potential) talent on offense, I think he is more than capable to uphold the LSU defensive tradition and not be the reason for "the decline.". The ball is still in the court of the Cam Cameron to make this team competitive.

the fans behind the ole miss bench had a lot to do with winning that game. They were in Bo's head.

Chavis stats are inflated when you consider we had back to back shut outs against middle school teams.

Chavis is the new Saban. Steele is the new Miles. Get ready.

I call bull shite. stats alone are very misleading. the poster that stated games won as the single most important criterion was correct.

stats are a tool and are helpful in deciding quality production but they can be very misleading because they do not account for game situations (like TOP, etc).

if our D can make stops, esp in critical situations, create turnovers and give our offense the chance to win pretty much every game it will be deemed successful.

wow. just wow.

chavis will not change at a&m just like he didn't change at LSU. he will immediately improve their defense, esp the magic "yardage allowed" stat. he doesn't have the talent to field a dominant front 7 and his secondary is mediocre. whether all of that is talent or coaching is speculative but I suspect he'll be playing a lot of freshmen next year and will be weak up the middle. the offenseive coaches in the SEC know him like a book and his weaknesses are the same they always have been. mr chavis does not change.

I'll settle for not shitting the bed in the waning minutes of the Bama game in the coming years as a measure of success.

Top 10 D nationally is what is demanded at LSU and rightfully so.

Also, don't go "3rd down and Chavis" in play calling.

Never call the "pass prevent" defense EVER!
