Can someone give me a background of what led to the 5 infielder setup?

Man it's cool when a plan comes together.

TIA

Bases loaded no outs with the winning run on 3rd.

And the "plan" didn't really do anything but take Fraley out of the game. It was an infield popup and a line drive double play to Reid for the 2nd and 3rd outs.

I dont mind bringing in a 5th infielder but I don't know why we didn't just bring Fraley in from center.

They win with a score, so we sold out to stop the ball leaving the infield to get the force out at the plate.

Base loaded with no outs. The out fielders were useless except for a real shallow pop up.

They should have put the possum out in CF

Bases loaded no outs, one run wins the game. If a ball is launched into the outfield the runner at 3rd will almost certainly score. Closing off the infield with a 5th man to prevent a single up the middle gives you the best shot in that scenario

Florida had the bases loaded with nobody out. Anything into the outfield was going to score a run. So Maneiri took out Fraley and used Dawson as the 5th infielder in an effort to cover the middle infield area so that the runner in third could be thrown out at the plate in the case of an infield grounder.

Was Fraley capable of turning a DP if a ground ball was hit to him?

No outs. We had to stop the runner from getting to home plate at all costs, so any hit ball must go home for the force. Even a double play at 1st and 2nd cost a run and the game.
Infield popup (infield fly rule) and then the double play, closes Gators out

I'm female and don't understand 100% baseball strategy but I certainly didn't see why they didn't just move him up as well.

This was a somewhat unorthodox plan.

Normally, you pull all your outfielders in very shallow, since anything over their heads will score the winning run regardless.

The "extra infielder" takes that a step further, since a shallow fly to CF that may have been caught where the runner on third can't advance, would drop.

I do like the extra infielder, though agree that since your center fielder would normally be fairly sure handed with range, you don't take a bat like Fraley out, since you obviously hope to hold them and then score in the top of the inning.

With a runner on third and no outs in the bottom of the ninth--or later, you have to sell out to keep that run from scoring.

The possum whispered in CPM's ear. It worked.

Well turning a DP would have lost the game so it doesn't matter

Nobody in the infield would have attempted to turn a double play through second base. The question is, "could Fraley have fielded a ground ball and thrown it home for the force out?"

I have no problem with bringing Dawson into the game, just thought it should have been for Breaux and not Fraley. Slide Fraley to left field in that set up.

Agree. I thought the same thing last night.

Breaux has a pretty good arm, doesn't he? The thinking likely was he stayed in LF in case of a flyball and the runner tagging.
